Windows 10: Losing Custom Folders Icon When Moving To USB Flash

Dear All,

I used to customize my icons specially for Movies and TV Collection to give it a nice look.

While using Windows 8.1 i used the below to keep the icons shown even if i transferred the folder to any other USB Flash or other computer at the desktop.ini file and was working perfectly

Now after installing Windows 10 and using the same way i use , when copying the folder to USB Flash or other computer i lose the icon ! and it's not shown anymore !!

any idea why this happens and how to solve it ?

Windows 10 | Can no longer customize folder icons in windows exporer?

You have two unrelated issues.

First, for some reason folders on D: aren't even displaying the Properties > Customize tab. Can you upload a screenshot of any folder's Properties dialog so we can see that the tab's missing? Also upload a screenshot of that same folder's Security tab.

Is the Customize tab missing for folders on any other drive too? For example if you plug in a USB drive, can you see the tab for its folders?

Your second problem, regarding already customized folders losing their custom icon when copied or moved, is thanks to a bug introduced in Win10 1607 and still not fixed. See more details in my thread

Is there any way to get the original icons to display again after the shortcuts are moved into a folder?

Original Title: Shortcut icons lost when moved into folder.

Often when I move shortcuts from the desktop into a newly created folder, the shortcuts lose their icons. The shortcuts are still fully functional when inside the folder, but they are just blank white rectangles.

Why does this happen? Is there any way to get the original icons to display again after the shortcuts are moved into a folder?

I am also facing the same issue too.

Even i am losing the Folder icon while moving file from one Drive to another Drive as well like: from Drive E:\ to Drive F:\ as well.

All this happened after installing Windows 10 Anniversary Update.

Some years ago I played with it and had different colored drive icons. This page should help getting started:

Haven't tried it since getting away from WinXP, rely more on putting a suitable Label on each drive such as WDC2TB_1 for a USB 2TB Western Digital HDD and Lexar64GB_1.

I'm recalling that each drive had to have both the new icon and an .inf or .ini file to do it. But memories being what they are????

Thanks Buddy, for the information as on the first instance i was thinking it was only a problem at my pc because of some corrupted windows installation but my brother's pc is also facing the same problem after upgrading to anniversary update.

I think its MS strategy to loose their customers by doing this silly things.

Yep, totally non-intuitive effect, and no accessible info on it. Great.

 

One way around this problem for now is..
1. go to folder were the icon is NOT showing
2. right click folder and go to " properties "
3. click properties and go to " customize "
4. then within customize just press "ok"
and the icon image should show up.
