Loss for Windows 8.1 while Windows 10 makes an appearance

"Windows 7 remains the top used operating system for PCs, with a 56.26% share in December, up from 53.71% in November. Windows XP, which Microsoft no longer supports, had an 18.26% share in December, higher than the 13.57% it had in November."

yes, but ,now TODAY and when Win 8, Win 8.1 and Win 10 saw/see the light....there are way more tablets and Iphones then ever before.

I found and still find Win 7 a bit lame, not having any personality.....

For me Win 8 should have had the chance for more development, but no, now we have Win 10, a crippled Win 8/Win 7 combo.

Whaw.....but since everybody is happy....let it be....

That makes no sense. If a computer changes hands that does not change the overall inventory. If I give you my computer, that does not change the total number of computers in the world. ,
For the most part you are correct about gifts, there is a way that would work but very few people would do that. However, I still standby places selling Windows 7 at reduced prices could very well increase the usage statistics in Windows 7. Right, there are still ways to buy a Windows 7 PC - but at the tune of 30 Million+ in 1 month ?? And from where did the 50 Million new XPs come from.

Why? Even though I don't like the W8 series, it doesn't seem reasonable that ~5 percentage points of the Desktop PC users running it would suddenly swap back to XP.

It seems more likely that NetMarketShare accidentally included the sites that they recently excluded, which resulted in that ~6% swap from XP to the W8 series (a couple of months ago). Thank you for answering my why. . .excellent answer.

The linked article saying their making changes to how they collect their data makes it likely that the December reports are garbage. Something to keep in mind is that they apparently get their data by seeing what operating system people are using when viewing certain websites, and, personally, I've never found a complete list of websites they monitor. If the monitor mostly tech sites, the surge in xp users could simply be people looking to buy new computers. Whether or not there is an explanation, month to month reports like this, especially since they don't give all the information, aren't going to be a reliable look at the real market share. They just give a general idea of what the market share is likely to be over a longer period of time. So, comparing it to last months is pointless. Comparing it to 6 months ago, or 12 months ago might show an actual trend.

Nah, I don't think so. Mom and pap would not even know what Chrome is. And they are probably a large part of the users.

Believe me - in my computer club we once moved the IE favorites from the left side to the right side (I think that was from IE8 to IE9). That discombobulated half of the audience. And we have over 800 members. Those people would never touch Chrome.

  11. I remember all the fuss over shifting the favorites thing that was a funning one there *Biggrin

Will all of the android devices and game crazies out there Chrome is the clear winner
There's more young than old people out there *Wink

I believe ie has lost allot of users in the last couple of years and Chrome and Firefox have gained :/
There was a more reliable poll/ article and it was Chrome Firefox and a distant third ie *Wink

  12. Say What? Ever heard the term Baby Boomers? *Wink

I wouldn't even say that more young people use computers than older people - because those same Baby Boomers built a lot of what is used today. The generation is retired or retiring (most haven't passed out of existence yet) and it's a bit different from The Greatest Generation. We're not just old gezzers ya know *Cool

Polls have to be considered from the purpose of the poll, who initiated it($), what questions were asked and how they were phrased (plus other supporting or rejection questions), as well as the sample size. There's a complete science to it and the results can be skewed.

Anywayyyyyy .. Chrome might be higher because so many free applications offer it in the install phase. Does the poll consider only the installed base or does it account for people actually using it as their primary browser? Your guess is as good as mine.

I distrust the accuracy of almost every poll, they're usually a popularity contest - particularly after seeing the basis of the poll *Wink

    C'est la vie!

While it's true that the one of the largest demographics is the end of the baby boomers, 50-54 7.2%, people 50 or greater only account for 32.1% of the US population. Start of Generation X (45-49) is the single largest group at 7.4%. And, if we take 0-34 it accounts for 47.2% of the population. This, according to the 2010 US Census.

Remember. All those boomers had kids. And most of those had kids.. and some of them have had kids.. and even some of them have already had kids...

  14. So what you are saying is that the US Government is lying when it claims there aren't enough people of working age to pay for pensions (except politicians' pensions obviously).

Politicians in Australia are always trotting that line out when they complain about a lack of government income, which is usually followed a few minutes later by the unveiling of their latest corporate tax cut policy.

Only ... only 32.1% - hey you young whipper snapper, get off my lawn *Cool *Smile

My goodness; babies having babies! Yep, I'll be a great-grandfather soon
(the next 5 years if our granddaughter meets the right guy *Party

Of course I think I'm a very good grandfather, perhaps not great, right now.

A lot of people are having a lot of fun, as we speak
