Windows 10: Loss of Brightness Control due to Windows HDR

Dell Inspiron 7570

While watching Netflix on any platform app or microsoft edge the video randomly dims. Soon after that the brightness control on my laptop also stops working. The slider moves but no change in brightness.

The problem does not stop after a restart either. This problem persists even though the laptop is plugged-in.
I have installed latest display drivers and updated windows as well, but it did not stop the problem. I have tried disabling and then enabling the display driver from Device Manager, which does brighten the screen but I still cannot control the brightness.
I know that the device is not at fault because when I boot into Manjaro Linux, the brightness control works properly.

So I was looking around in Windows Settings and found that my HDR settings were turned ON. When I tried to turn it off, the Windows Settings app hanged and terminated. So I rebooted once again and tried to turn it OFF without visiting Netflix this time, and it was able to turn off. My brightness control is back now.
I wonder why HDR settings are interfering with windows brightness control

Hi Ella,

To adjust the brightness, see the steps below:

• Go back to Power Options, and tick on the High performance.
• See if you can adjust the brightness.

If this not work, we highly suggest that you create an Administrator account, and re-do the steps above.

Windows 10 HDR & SDR

If I understand correctly, you want to play HDR content on your PC with an SDR display. This may be possible, but it will depend on the app and probably also on hardware.

The Movies & TV app in Windows can support this on non-HDR laptops that have a sufficiently-bright display. The reason why it is limited to laptops is that there needs to be OS control of brightness settings (not available for external monitors) and some
OS influence of LCD backlight operation (Windows doesn't control the backlight but gives suggestions to the display driver based on the kind of content being shown).

 

HDR too bright

thanks I can reduce brightness from nvidia panel or even the monitor panel but no matter I get pain in my eyes only when hdr enabled
