Windows 10: Loss of monitor availability

Since the last windows update, every time my PC wakes from sleep and occasionally at startup, windows 10 version 20H2 cannot find my second monitor, and all applications which had been there have been moved to monitor 1. If I go to Display Settings>multiple Displays and click 'Detect', windows tells me that no other monitor can be found. A restart of the PC does not always fix this, and a hard reset has to be used to enable both monitors once again. This is extremely tiresome, and has wasted countless hours.

'Generic PnP monitor' issue

Hello Angelica,

I would suggest you follow steps to update the monitor driver:

Press Windows + X keys

Choose Device manager

Click on Monitors

Right click on ‘Generic PnP monitor’ and click on update driver

Tap on Browse my computer for driver software

Tap on Let me pick from a list of available drivers

Choose ‘Generic PnP monitor’ and tap on Next

When you are done please restart the computer.

 

Trouble with 2 monitors

I suggest you to change the settings to Extended Monitor and check if it helps.

Please follow below steps:

• Right Click any ware of the Desktop, and launch Personalization.
• Go to dual monitor settings under personalization, and change it Extended Monitor.
