Windows 10: Loss of sound on winamp after Windows 10 update?

I seem to have a problem others have had in past years. I've been using WINAMP to play sounds for decades. Now, when I use it to try to play an mp3, I get the error message: BadDirectSound driver. Please install proper drivers or select another device in configuration. I have seen others had the same problem in years past. This must have happened quite recently to me. The fixes I see for others are very complicated. Can you help? Thanks.

Windows 10 keeps muting Winamp

Hi,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

The issue could possibly be due to Winamp involuntarily controlling volume by itself. I suggest you to try the steps listed below and check if it works:

• Open Winamp Preferences window and select
  Output.
  
• On the right pane, select Nullsoft waveOut plug-in
  and choose Configure.
  
• At Volume Control, uncheck
  Enable.
  
• Save the changes, and exit Winamp.
  
• Restart Winamp, raise the volume now to see if it still resets.

Sound loss
