    Loss of start menu

    hi all,

a couple of week ago I lost the use of my start button, windows 10 verison.

I had to download and install a 3rd party alternative to get any kind of a start menu working.

I've trawled through a certain search engine, and done all suggested....

ISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth into the PowerShell window

    sfc /scannow

    etc...

all to no joy. Even created a new user, which resulted in no working start menu.

Anyone any thoughts on how to get this working again, with out restoring the pc back to windows 8 and letting updates take their course ???

    TIA

    :)

Loss of Background Image on Start Menu

I haven't heard of that as a problem.

Actually, I haven't seen any way of putting an image on the start menu background. So, how do you do that? Or do you mean the images on the individual tiles, the "live images"?

I had exactly the same problem as you. I solved it by (unfortunately) formatting my drives and installing W10 from a dongle.

Well if you want too, you could try the repair windows method. This will repair all your windows files, and not remove any of your personal files or apps. After doing this thou, and you find everything working the way your Windows should. Then please make a Complete Image Backup using a program like Macrium Reflect. If everyone would just make regular backups, it would save them a lot of problems repairing their Windows.....Here is the link for Windows Repair.

The original OS (Windows 8), was a preinstall OS (like most nowadays), therefore there is no disc or iso.

Can I still do repair install ?

    Loss of start menu

We were not asking you to do repair install on Windows 8.
It's Windows 10 we were talking about. Windows 8 has nothing to do with what we want you to do.

I am assuming that your Win 10 has been activated.
If yes, then you have the digital entitlement which means you can reinstall your edition of Win 10 in the same computer any time you want, as often as you want.
    No product key is required.
    Activation will be automatic.

Just use the link posted to you for Repair Install.
The tutorial will show you how to download your edition of Windows 10 iso file. Just read it over.
    Use Step #4.

  10. There is an alternative POSSIBILITY. For some unknown reason, re-installing your pre-installed Win 10 aps sometimes solves the problem. You will lose any game scores you have saved. And here are some other non-drastic solutions that MIGHT work.

Folks, so many people are having trouble with the Start Button not working in Windows 10, that I have assembled all the various cures. None of them will work every time, but there’s a good chance that one of them will.

    1) Go to this web page Has your Windows 10 Start menu stopped working? Here are four ways to fix it - BT to learn how to use PowerShell (a built-in Windows utility that you already have) to fix it. His first two ideas are pretty good. Don’t do his more drastic solutions, though, until you try these other ones.
    2) Uninstall your anti-virus program and re-install it.
    3) Simply use the Windows key (between the Ctrl and Alt keys) instead
    4) Type “Classic Shell” into a search engine and install it. It is a free Start Button that works great.
    5) Use System Restore

Hi, thanks- it would be worth putting these in priority order - least consequential to most.
Note that the reset and refresh in your (1) have more drastic consequences than
    2, 3 or 5 System Restore
(which is off by default so requires user to have turned it on and - as restore points are not generated for Windows updates in '10 for the user to have done sthg to create one)

    or
    an in-place upgrade repair install.

A 3rd party start menu is not a fix, but a workaround, so should be last.
