    Lost access to some folders in my old hard drive


    About a year ago i changed the hard drive in my laptop for an SSD, i kept the old one because it had a lot of important data i wanted to keep, never formatted it. The problem came when today i tryed to access the "Ussers" folder to get some images, and it won't let me in, it says i dont have permission to access the folder. The only exit i'm seing is booting the computer through the external disc but im affraid to get blue screen or something, it is connected through a USB. Is there something else i can do?

    Accessing old hard drive

    Hi,

    Apologies if this has already been answered. I've seen similar questions but not go the answer I need.

    My old laptop (XP) died and I removed the hard drive. I got hold of an adaptor to be able to plug the hard drive into a different laptop via USB to access the files. However, I do not have permission to access the majority of folders.

    I've tried to change it via the advanced security settings but there's no 'owner' tab.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi there, I've attached an old hard drive to my pc and I've started a process for granting full control on folder USERS to my userid. Windows 10 was happily granting the permissions to the folders and files under USERS when, accidentally, the external hard drive got disconnected from the pc. I got an error, connected the drive again but it was too late. When I clicked on USERS it said that the drive (FLost access to some folders in my old hard drive :) didn't exist then I got a BSOD. I've restarted the pc and accessed the old drive (FLost access to some folders in my old hard drive :) again, I can access USERS but instead of getting the original ACCESS DENIED message, now it opens USERS but it's EMPTY!! I lost access to everything under it!!
    I've tried to find a solution on the internet but to no avail.
    I'm hoping someone here could help me recovering those "lost" files and folders.

    Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community.

    I suggest you to follow the below steps and check if it helps.

    • Plug USB hard drive into old computer.
    • Open File Explorer (Win+E) and open the USB drive.
    • Open another File Explorer window and open your documents folder.
    • Drag files to the USB drive.
    • Move drive to new computer.
    • Drag files to their new homes in the matching documents/pictures/videos/whatever folders you use to organize.
    Please let us know if you have any further issues. in uploading/ transferring data.
