Windows 10: Lost everything after restart.

I tried logging in to my computer as I usually do and it kept telling me that I couldnt login, which is odd, but I had to get on a zoom call so quickly so I just restarted my computer. After a few minutes my sign in screen came back up displaying my name like normal, let me login, and I quickly notice that my background has changed, my what I think is called the task bar is missing a few apps, and that rang an alarm but I just figured maybe it was just a slow reboot and it'll come back shortly because it's done that before where it takes a few minutes to go back to normal. However I still needed to make it to my call and I go to Microsoft Edge and the first thing that pops up is like a small tutorial on how to use it almost and how I want it set up and that made me think, "oh new update, moving on." and then I go to my favorites and that's where I see, I have none there. But just yesterday I had all my saved favorites for easy access, this made me worry now and I went to my files to see if anything was there, nope. No documents, no pictures, nothing. Almost like a brand new computer except I still had 2 apps that I had previously downloaded way back. I just would like to know how I can get my files and documents back I have very important items in there and I'm super stressed about it because a few of those files I need for my career : please help.

Also, just as I was about to submit this I go to check and see what windows version I have and it says I have just installed Windows 10, is that why everything is gone?? I didn't update intentionally I'm so confused.

Thanks for your patient help and analysis, zbook. I'll step through some of your suggestions over the next few days - there's a lot to do and some look a bit hairy! That is, for a PC that is working sweetly right now...

One step I did try right away was to answer your question about whether my BIOS is up-to-date. I had no success at the AMI site but did get some info from this commercial site:

Regarding your issue with contact list that is lost in Windows live mail, we suggest to check this thread:

Contacts list disappeared from Windows Live Mail. Look for MikeSTL and ¡Firedog answers. It contains troubleshooting steps pertaining to the issue.
