Windows 10: Lost files (mostly pictures) after "critical update"

My computer did a critical update on 8/18/18. Once finished, all of my pictures and documents were gone...along with a few programs. I tried to do a restore to a different date, but can't due to...my antivirus not allowing it???


I did notice that after the updates were added and before the computer restarted, it was stuck with the screen showing hibernating. It was like this overnight. I finally held the power button down for it to shutdown. When it started back up, the updates finished. After, my files were gone.

Lost Picture ID + all photo files and Touchpad

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community. Appreciate your interest in using Windows 10.

I would like to ask if the option to keep files and settings was selected at the time of roll back to previous version.

Also, some files may be hidden. So, I suggest you to check the size of the drive where the photos were saved. If the files are hidden, suggest you to follow the steps provided below:

• Right click on Start icon and select Command Prompt (Admin).
• Type/ (copy & paste) the below command line.

Attrib –h –r –s /s /d D:*.* (Replace the letter ”D” with the drive letter where the photos were saved)

Check if the photos are available.

For the ID picture on sign-in, can set it again by following the steps below:

• Go to PC Settings.
• Click on Accounts.
• In the right pane, click on Browse under Add a Picture.
• Select the desired picture and click on OK.

Lost Files (Pictures , Videos...) while AND after Windows 10

I understand the inconvenience caused to you with the files and folders lost after installing the Windows 10, we will help you with this issue.

Do let us know the following to assist you better with this issue:

• Which were the latest updates installed on your device?
• Where exactly are you looking for the files, pictures and documents?
• Have you tried to look for the files in Safe mode and check if the files are present?
• Have you tried to look for the files in Windows.old folder?

I suggest you to place the computer in safe mode
and check if the files, pictures and documents are present.

Follow the below steps to place the computer in normal mode.

• Press Windows + R keys to open Run
  command.
• Type msconfig and press Enter.
• In the System Configuration window, click on
  General tab.
• Select Start-up selection as Normal startup, click on
  Apply and Ok.
• Follow onscreen instructions.
