Windows 10: Lost folders, icons and desktop photo after Win10 update 1 week ago

Hello,


Shutdown my system the night before and when booted up the next morning, it was a different world on my computer. Not sure what has happened and after a search, tried several options to restore with no luck. Every time I shut down and boot back, everything disappears. I even restored files from a online backup and the same thing occurred after shutting and rebooting. Very frustrating. Checked for virus', hacks, etc., but nothing. Any ideas on how to restore and keep everything from disappearing?

Cannot change desktop icon

Sometimes a desktop icon changes from what it was to a plain white folder. Might be something I did but not sure what.

To change it to the icon I want, I go:

1. Rt-click icon > Properties > Change icon
2. I select the icon I want from the thumbnails of icons.
3. Click OK
4. Click Apply

But the icon does not change. It just stays looking like a white folder.
HOWEVER, if I pin the icon to the taskbar, the icon on the taskbar does look like the icon I selected in step-2. So the change is registered with Win10 but the icon on the desktop just doesn't change.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

 

Desktop folder stuck with an "empty folder" icon

That sounded like the solution but actually it didn't work at all.

I solved in another way, and NOTHING else worked (I've been trying for weeks):

1. Rename your desktop folder, something like "olddesktop";
   
2. Create a new folder called "Desktop";
   
3. Apply the Desktop icon stored in imageres.dll (the folder behind the desktop will appear automatically with the imageres.dll icon, the SHELL32.dll icon is just the desktop with no folder behind);
   
4. Right-click the old folder and use the "Path" tab to move its content to the new folder;
   
5. Delete the "olddesktop" folder;
   
6. Refresh your user folder with the F5 key.

 

Lost desktop icons and folders

After an iTunes update, I have lost my original desktop icons and associated folders. How do I restore my original desktop?
