Windows 10: lost log in password on home PC, How can I log into this PC without a factory reset?

At the last "password expiring soon" reset warning, the password was changed and all was good. Went on vacation and came back to realize we had forgotten the password. When I click on "Forgot password" I am asked to insert a jump drive. Then I'm asked to verify the password was stored on that drive. Well, there was never a back-up made.I'd like to be able to reset the password without wiping the computer out as there are some sensitive documents that were not backed up.

Well you did not say that you don't really know what you are doing. It's not a problem of course, but it changes things a little.

It's not even clear if the PC or the router is the problem at this time, so I suggested that you disable some unnecessary things which are usually known to cause many problems, sorry if those were too complicated.

• You could reset some network related stuffz on the PC as a next step. Open an elevated command prompt (run as administrator), and enter the followings on the PC:
  netsh int ip reset reset.log
  netsh int ipv6 reset
  netsh winsock reset
  netsh branchcache reset
  netsh advfirewall reset
  (note: You can export your current firewall rules in the "group policy" before the reset if it's needed for some reason)
  
  
• Btw, Would it be a problem to reset the router to the default settings if the things we are trying will not help? There is a menu point for that called "factory settings" (and also a little hole on the back if you prefer that one).. the Administrator username in the router after the reset would be admin and the password is probably on a sticker at the bottom of the router (special settings needed to go online with your ISP might be also necessary)
  This is not needed now (not yet), but perhaps the source of the problem is at the router and not the PC in question, so we may come to that eventually.

ps.: Do you have a second network card you could test in that PC and a different cable to rule out some hardware issues on the PC side?

 

No Log-In after factory reset

I did a factory reset on my old computer to get it ready to dispose off. Trouble is, it comes back to the log-in screen but it won't accept my usual password and I don't know how to work around that. Any suggestions?

 

Logging into XP without password: Advice Please

Right, a m8 of mine cant log into his 2 business PC's that are on a network along with a laptop. The 2 PC's boot to the login screen but will not allow a password to be entered (well, his usual password)

How do I get into Windows XP so I can turn the passwords off or reset them? BTW is it possible that a virus could have caused this problem????

Any advice would be great because I dont really want to have to format them both *Frown
