Windows 10: Lost profile and files in Windows 10

Hi,


I have seen similar posts and want to see if I have the same issue.


I have three user profiles set up for the same desktop PC. I am running Windows 10. Suddenly, a couple of weeks' ago we could only see my daughter's profile. My original admin profile and my wife's just disappeared. All the files and folders associated with those files have also disappeared.


I've read posts that suggest this can happen after a Windows 10 update. I was not aware of this being the cause but it might have been. I didn't see the update happen, it may have done so automatically in the background. There were no error messages. The c drive is full so I don't know if that could have caused the problem.


I have set up a local admin account but I can't log in to it as there seems to be no way of switching user. Can you help with this?


I've tried looking for the files but can't find them. There is no windows.old folder that I can see. However, I keep getting messages saying the c drive is full.


I have got some files backed up to OneDrive and a full system backup via Acronis. However, I'm still getting used to how these work and pretty sure that not all files are backed up across these two things, so want to get access to my files on the desktop.


Can anyone help?

Lost default photo viewer after profile rebuild


Thanks Brink. I've tried those steps before i started searching Google. After the profile rebuild i don't have the Photo app listed to choose to make it default in either the system settings for default apps or the Open With option.

I can't even find it doing a search. Seems to have been removed somehow with the profile rebuild, which doesn't make sense.

Might be helpful to list what i've done I've done the open with check, the choose default program in the system menu, tried that in device manager default programs also. I've checked the programs and features Turn windows features on/off and it's not listed there (never thought it was but that was a suggestion), searched the MS Store, it's not listed there either.

I don't like playing in the registry unless i have defined steps and haven't found anything for this yet, just the Win7 version like in my OP.

Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

• Open a new Explorer window.
• Click View in the ribbon.
• Click Options.
• Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
• Click OK

Issues with the lost files in the account in Windows 10

1. When you say “main one” is it local account or Microsoft account?

2. Did you make any changes in the account settings?

I suggest you to login to the account where the files are missing and then follow the below steps.

• Open the Run by Windows+ R and then Enter.
• Press . ( the full stop button in the keyboard) and then Enter.
• Check whether you could see the user profile files.
