Windows 10: M.2 SSD not being able to boot from it, windows doesn't recognise.

It should be able to be set to PCIe X4 mode for desktops. This is how it is for ASUS, not sure with MSI

Ok, this is what happened after all the comments and suggestions, @Dude: Thanx for the video, my mb had non e of those settings, it had the raid/option memory gene or achi. Can only choose one or the other. @Saltgrass, my settings did point out auto and enabled the pcie x4, gen 3. I did an bios flash as suggested, because my bios was not the latest version, after a reformat the m.2 was picked up, still cant install OS onto it as it states legacy not found, removed my dvd rom from the sata port to another, and the drive was found and installed. Only issue now is that it's still not my OS drive but it at least now works and is installed, but on the Intel rst drive the obtain memory gene option to enable is greyed out, and shows as disabled. However the program lists the M.2 and it is working 100%,. I installed overwhatch onto it, it performs perfectly. But will update the intel driver tonight and see if that makes any difference. Seems the bios flash enabled the settings listed by @Dude that was not present pre-flash.

So the m.2 drive works. I can game off it and install omnto it. Can not install windows on it, gene memmory is enabled, pcie x4 is on and on auto detect, Motherbaord lists all the drives connected, motherboard ahs been updated to latest bios. After flash new settings became available, m.2 is now on memmory gene enabled not achi, windows os is enabled and fast boost is enabled, intel rst is installed and lists all the ssds and the m.2, however the m.2 on memmory gene is dissabled and the option to enable is greyed out. Will update the driver as Essenbe suggested of the m.2 and see if anything changes. Thank you all for the help, I can now atleast use my m.2

Isn't that meant for Intel Optane module use ?
IMO if you enable it then the NVMe drive is used to accelerate the system drive. At least in BIOS/UEFI. So it's not surprising Windows does not want to install itself on there.

Here's what I would do: disconnect all other drives from the mobo, then make sure the Bios is set to full EFI mode..
Insert your install media and boot off that. Windows should see the NVMe drive and take care of the rest for you.
No need for any drivers unless you want to use RAID mode which I understand you won't.

You are aware the PCIe drive does not use the Intel driver? I see some places regarding turning it off for the M.2 slots.

If you want to check the configuration of the drive, look in the Device Manager and Storage Controllers. If it shows as NVMe it is using that controller. If it shows the SATA controller, it is not.

You can also, and I think this was mentioned, select the drive in Device Manager and change the View setting to Devices by connection. It should be hanging on a SATA bridge or the NVMe controller.

Your comments about seeing a Legacy device makes me think you are not installing as required. I am not familiar with the Intel Optane options but it looks like it is for using a special memory device or setting up a RAID configuration for using both M.2 slots for a RAID.

That Samsung drive is PCIe and that M2 slot only supports PCIe M.2 drives.
My latest Kabylake board is similar to OP's one actually.

Yes, so that setting has to be disabled. You can also add Sata drives to the pool if like but there's not much point in doing so.

Hello again, yes it is set to disabled as the motherboard set it to such, so it seems it is then working the way it should, if I understand correctly it not needing to be installed with other drives, I did however update my driver for intel, and it is now listed as a bootable drive.

I want to thank each and everyone of you techs for the assistance, if I can give short 2cents, it all started with an "out of date" motherboard bios, after that I could set the settings as instructed, then I updated the intel drive and set the pci's to auto detect, it disabled the gene memory, but I can use my drive and is listed as a boot option. The legacy issue came up after adding the standard hdd to the pc,I then followed fdegrove 's advice and removed all drives, and I removed the hdd and all is now 100%. I purchased the i9 system Saturday, and can finally say it is all working as it should 4days later haha. You guys rock!

 

Great news. Good to hear you have it working like it should. How about some pictures of your rig in the section I linked above (you always build a great rig) and it would be really good to get a report on how the new CPU and X299 chipset work. It's all new and we would like to hear about them, from someone who actually knows. You know how I feel about the "professional" reviewers. There are only a couple I pay any attention to. Congratulations on getting it working as it should.

essenbe and fdegrove haha thanx, I wanted to post my rig, but it looks like crap compared to some rigs I saw there. I am waiting for my new graphic card to arrive in stock for my "complete" rig. At this stage my radiators and fans are all just sitting in a box, so the pc is stock standard and cpu cooled by an i80 v2 cpu cooler. Nothing photo worthy I am afraid.

As for my opinion on the i9's, for me it boosted my gaming performance beyond imagination, it is as if it was what my gfx card needed, I understand that ddr3 ram I had and now ddr4 is also a big difference etc. But can;t deny the performance I gained from the i9, I am running photoshop smooth as silk haha, might make myself a signature lol. I am happy with the temps too, running on idle at 28c, and under load with the Witcher 3 on epic graphix it sits at around 35/37c. And thats about 5 or 6c higher than I got on my previous custom watercooled loop. So very happy with the cpu as far as my limited knowledge goes.

 

You forget that I know how good you are. Tell that to someone who doesn't know any better.
