Windows 10: Macrium. A quick question on the Macrium recovery splash screen.

After much persuasion from you guys, and having encountered a real issue/bug with Windows own disk imager *Smile I'm giving Macrium Reflect a fair trial.

Quick question hopefully.

I've installed the Macrium 'Add recovery Boot Menu' option so that I can restore under Windows... and everything works OK but I'm surprised to see the recovery screen whenever I do a manual restart and when I boot from cold. Fast boot is enabled by the way.

Question is... is this normal to see this every time as I am doing ? (My fast boot isn't quite as fast with this getting in the way)

It will be tomorrow before I can look in again but if anyone can confirm this is correct and normal then that would be great.

external hard drive with password? Is it free or paid?

I'm using Macrium Reflect Free. Macrium doesn't provide support for the Free version. If they did, I'd be asking Macrium my question.

Macrium does offer a KB and a Forum. The Forum is view-only unless you own a paid version. You cannot post questions without owning a paid version.

In searching the KB and Forum, I could not find an answer to my question. Thus, I came here.

 

Yes it is normal and correct. That's what happens when you select that option to create the boot menu entry. I believe Macrium's Reflect boot.wim file that runs when you select that boot item from the boot menu is contained in the boot\Macrium folder on your hard drive/SSD and that folder is probably hidden.

If you create have a Macrium Relfect rescue USB or DVD and you know the computer will boot from it you don't need that boot menu item because the Rescue USB/DVD will have the exact same boot.wim file on it.

 

That's the reason why I created this video to allow to boot from an Internal/External Drive without seeing the nagging dual boot screen.

Thanks for confirming this is normal. I find booting from external media is always a bit inconvenient but agree that the option to be able to do so is vital. Its got me out of trouble on more than one occasion.

If you simply go advanced system setting in systems in control panel, you can change the default boot time to be as low as one second (I set it to 2 as 1 second is a bit fast to react).

You can turn it off completely as well ie boot to OS without seeing menu, but you can reset timer later.

I prefer to keep it there on 2 seconds as it is handy to boot to MRF just to get to a winpe environment now and then eg delete stubborn files, attach vhds etc.

Here is where to change it.

Uncheck box, and it just boots to default OS as selected automatically.

Recheck box and you get to chose from boot menu

(I also noticed... and maybe this is a Dell/quick start issue... that sometimes I would see the recovery screen countdown as it should, and then boot to Ten or it would just stick on the recovery screen with no countdown. In that situation I had to manually click Ten. This is partly one of reasons I'm reluctant to use bootable media as the normal means of recovery because the Dell is hit and miss as to whether it works first time or not. It was the same with Acronis and W8.1 Anyhow, onward and upward... more testing to do )
