    Macrium and AOMEI...but Veeam Free?

    Hi guys,

since it seems that everybody is disappointed with Acronis for the way is taking with True Image (years ago it saved my life many times, but last test with 2018 with his linux bootable rescue media meesed up my boot configuration), I decided to drop, and look for something better.
First point that a backup/disaster recovery software has to have for me is reliability. Second, simple to use. Third, cheap!

I know that here a lot of users who I admire and follow, use Macrium, and others AOMEI, also on free version (for personal use).
But a friend of mine, that works in server and data center ambient, told me about that software house Veeam, that has started ro release two years ago a wokstation/laptop free version backup software, also for commercial use.
He said that this version is really great, simply to use, with an high reliability. Only cons he says is not very fast in backup and restore process.

I'm very confused, since I was quite going to choose Macrium (free version) for my personal laptop, after searching and reading here a lot of discussions about it, but I'd like to know if someone else have also tried Veeam.

    Thanks a lot!

    :)

  2. 0xc000000e windows 10 cloned on ssd

    Thanks for your help,

After trying several possible solutions here is what made the job :

I cleaned entirely my ssd (diskpart)

repaired the boot of my hdd (bootrec /rebuildbcd)

managed to boot on my hdd

cloned the hdd system with macrium to ssd (great job macrium !!! same job with aomei failed ...)

    booted on ssd ...

    AND IT'S A VICTORY !!!

    How to rebuild hard drive

Sounds like a System Image program is what you would want. Automatically update that image every week or month,, or daily.. lots of options for how often.

    AOMEI Backupper

    Macrium Reflect

    EaseUs Todo

there are lots... those above are popular & respected by most.

    Macrium and AOMEI...but Veeam Free?

Veeam is rooted in corporate applications, it´s not a "home" program like AOMEI. Some occasional operations, like installing it and creating the recovery boot medium can be slow.

But it´s fast to create and restore backups. Whether it´s faster or slower than Macrium depends on your hardware and the type of backups that you use (full or incremental). Veeam is oriented to create a full backup and then a chain of incremental backups, but you can create a full backup whenever you want. You can´t create backups from the recovery medium, it´s only for recovery purposes.

But if you are new to imaging apps, it´s easier and simpler to go Macrium, and you will get more support here and in another forums.

I have used it and tbh it still has a long way to go before it catches up with Macrium Reflect. When it restores images, it does not restore them in same order as original host and was generally slower. I do not recommend it.

    Thanks for your suggestions.
Just to be clear, I have a laptop with a 500GB ssd (about 50% free space), and I usually made with Acronis True Image 2014, two scheduled full system backup images a week (don't like differential and incremental ones) on a NAS (well not really a nas, it's a usb 3.0 box where are inserted two 1TB 2,5" hard drives set in raid mode, plugged on the usb port of my wifi router) during night time, and once a month also manually a full system backup image on a usb 3.0 1TB external hd.
So, I don't have many big needs about it.
Just to be able to restore the whole system from a bootlable usb media recovery in case of disaster, accessing to the shared net folder or to the usb external drive, and to browse the full backup image just to see some files and decide to restore.

    Thanks a lot.

    Macrium and AOMEI...but Veeam Free?

Do you mean that Veeam Free doesn't restore the partitions from the full image backup, in the same order as the original host?
If I'm not going to change something in partitions, since it's a laoptop and I'm not going to add or delete partitions or change their size, do you think could be a good choice in a small office situation?

    Thanks

Yes - I do mean that, but not a major issue I suppose, but annoying.

I cannot say it would be a good choice in an office, as licencing terms differ, and office networks differ. Veeam is more geared to large networks by design (but not necessarily superior Macrium Reflect, Acronis etc.

AOMEI Backupper Standard version is free for personal and simple commercial use.

Macrium Reflect is free for personal use, but not commercial use

Acronis is not free for any use.

Veeam is free I believe, but not sure.

In the end, it comes down to what you need, and what you are prepared to pay.

In the end, you have to test each product you are interested against your systems, and verify they work as you wish.

A lot of (major) companies only backup network data, and have standard images used to deploy software, and never use image backups. If they get an issue, they just wipe device and reinstall standard image. This can be done using standard Windows tools.

Basically, you have to decide your needs and choose accordingly.

If you need stability and no fuss fast backup and restore the one's are Macrium and AOMEI. You can ask anybody that has used any of both programs and they will vouch for it including me. I have Acronis 2016, Macrium Workstation v6 and Aomei Backupper Pro and all three are great! On my experience, on size it's Acronis, speed both Acronis and Macrium but Aomei ain't that bad too. I have heard of Veeam too but am reluctant to take it for a spin since I have no time at the moment and for me try it out I need to prep a dedicated partition for it. In the end as the guys have put it, it will be you who will decide what will gel with your preference and liking. We are only here to guide you based on our experience. Just to add Macrium Free version 7 will be out by late November or early December.

    Goodluck!

Well, I think I'm going to use Veeam free agent for Windows in my company laptop, since is free also for commercial use (Macrium free is only for personal use, and AOMEI free some people reported issues in distarer recovery situations), and in my personal home laptop I will use Macrium Free.
That's because my IT company department is only focused on servers backup and not too much on clients, they don't even create system images for quickly restore pc clients with the company apps, they prefer to loose time reinstalling the factory image and wait for all Windows updates, driver updates, reinstalling apps (I know it's silly...) so I want to manage this by my own, without any cost.

Thank you very much guys, for all your precious points of view and suggestions!

    Macrium and AOMEI...but Veeam Free?

Yes - this was introduced with version 7.1. I assume this is because key competitors were offering it free and given intent is for companies to use it, like it and realise they should upgrade to paid versions, this makes sense.

One serious word of advice, make sure you get agreement in writing from the IT Manager/Director before you use any non sanctioned system software on your Company Supplied Laptop, As this is considered Serious Breach of Rules and company Policy in Most companies, and in Most I have worked for or with is considered a Job Termination Offence.

Making the case for use of Images rather than simple re-installation, to the Company management is a good and valid point but doing this without sanction is a dangerous course of action

Yes, I've told him, and since he knows the company since he uses the pro version for managing our virtual servers, he said I can install if it's free for commercial use.
