Macrium image restore changes partition layout

I tried one again to use Macrium to backup only C:, clean install then restore only C:.
Once again it did more that I asked it to and removed the 16MB partition created by the clean install.

After clean install I had this, 4 partitions on Disk 0 (SSD):

    After restore I had this, 3 partitions o n Disk 0 (SSD):

I did not run the Macrium fix boot option after the restore so when I rebooted Win 10 ran Auto repair then the system booted up normally.

Why is Macrium doing this? Any idea?

Guess I'll ask in the Macrium forum and see what I can find out.

The reason I'm doing this is is Shift Restart from Power is not working, it just boots normally.

I just redid the steps in Brink's tutorial to setup Recimage, then ran
    reagentc /setosimage /path "location\ResetRecoveryImage" /index 1

I'll try Shift restart again now and see what happens.

Edit: Nope, still doesn't work. I know I'm missing a step or two ...

    :)

  2. Windows 10 System image restore failed (0x80780096)

Hi Norman. I'm Greg, a volunteer installation specialist and 8 year Windows MVP, here to help you.

Does the image contain the System partition which boots Windows, or has the partitioning on the hard drive changed at all since it was taken?

Windows backup imaging (which is being deprecated) is not flexible so has to be restored to the exact same partition offset (position on drive). If you don't have the same layout then I'd wipe the hard drive first, or just set up the reset you did, or do the
vastly superior Clean Install in this link so you have the best possible install and can preserve it with a decent imaging program like free Macrium.

    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki...

More about Macrium here which is easy as drag n drop partition, resize them on the fly, and always works:

    https://www.howtogeek.com/howto/7363/macrium-re...

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and let us know how it goes. I will keep working with you until it's resolved.

  3. Can't boot into PC "PC/Device needs to be repaired error code: 0xc000000e" Please help?

    1. Create a disk image of your C:

    using Macrium Reflect
, which is free imaging software.

    2. Remove all other disks.

    3. Clean install Win 10 making sure the new system partition is large enough.

    4. Check it boots ok.

    5. Overwrite the newly created C: by restoring your image of your present system partition.

    6. Run Startup Repair.

You should have a bootable system running your familiar Windows configuration.

Ztruker, during the macrium restore setup, are you first deleting the existing (clean installed) C: partition, then paying close attention to the sizing of the partition to restore (using drag and drop) - referring specifically to this part: http://knowledgebase.macrium.com/dis...ion+properties

Macrium did not do it. You did it, there is a difference between RESTORE and COPY. Restore C drive back to the SSD will put C drive where it was when you made a backup of C drive which in turn override the 16MB MSR partition. What you need is to COPY C Drive back to the SSD.

    To Copy:
    • Click on 1 to enable 2
    • Click on 2 to delete C
    • Click on 3 (C drive backup), drag and drop to 1->Next->Finish
    • Click on "Fix the Windows boot problems"

topguncp, that was the problem. Many thanks. All is well now as far as partition layout. Copy took a lot longer to complete than restore but it worked great.

Now to do a new full Macrium image backup of the SSD.

    Thanks.

    Nope, still doesn't work.

Hmmm, is this the problem (from reagentc /info)? \\?\GLOBALROOT\device\harddisk2\partition1\Recovery\WindowsRE

    This is what diskpart shows:

Yes, I would think that would be the problem because your WindowsRE image should be harddisk0\partition1 - the recovery partition.

How do I set it to that? /setreimage doesn't seem to accept that format:

Macrium image restore changes partition layout [IMG]

Edit: If I assign a drive letter I can see the Recovery partition on harddisk0\partition1. So if I assign it as Q then maybe this will work:

    Reagentc /setreimage /path Q:\Recovery\WindowsRE

Guess I'll try it and see what happens.

    That seems to have worked!!!!

Nope, still didn't work. Checked after the restart and it's disabled again. Tried enabling it and it stays disabled.

Code: C:\Users\rrkurtz>reagentc /info Windows Recovery Environment (Windows RE) and system reset configuration Information: Windows RE status: Disabled Windows RE location: Boot Configuration Data (BCD) identifier: 4f8fcc2d-ced2-11e5-8a83-448a5b06acdb Recovery image location: \\?\GLOBALROOT\device\harddisk1\partition2\Recimage Recovery image index: 1 Custom image location: Custom image index: 0 REAGENTC.EXE: Operation Successful. Seems like as soon as I removed the driver letter (Q) it becomes disabled.

Yup. I made it Q and now reagentc says enabled and the Windows RE location is correct again. I don't know how to fix this as I don't want it to have a drive letter for normal use.

Code: C:\Users\rrkurtz>reagentc /info Windows Recovery Environment (Windows RE) and system reset configuration Information: Windows RE status: Enabled Windows RE location: \\?\GLOBALROOT\device\harddisk0\partition1\Recovery\WindowsRE Boot Configuration Data (BCD) identifier: 4f8fcc2d-ced2-11e5-8a83-448a5b06acdb Recovery image location: \\?\GLOBALROOT\device\harddisk1\partition2\Recimage Recovery image index: 1 Custom image location: Custom image index: 0 REAGENTC.EXE: Operation Successful.[/quote]

Try copying the Windows RE location path as given by reagentc /info:
    \\?\GLOBALROOT\device\harddisk0\partition1\Recovery\WindowsRE

Then remove the drive letter. If reagentc /info shows disabled again, this time set the path using the above without assigning a drive letter at all.

    REAGENTC.EXE /setreimage /path \\?\GLOBALROOT\device\harddisk0\partition1\Recovery\WindowsRE
