Win 10 won't boot after recent update

I am getting confused. To me an .iso file is a way to install Windows by either burning it to DVD, or USB, and thereby making bootable install media, or by right-clicking on it and "Mounting" the .iso to access the Setup files.

I don't really understand what you mean by "USB hdd ( on which I have the win 10 bootable iso)"? Is that all you have on that USB hdd, or is Windows 10 also installed on that USB hdd?

  3. Upgrading to 10 from Win 7 with ISO

Sorry but i don't get it. I've read the article and i understand that for upgrading from Win 7 it's important to create a bootable device

    Prepare Windows 10 ISO file

After you have downloaded the Windows 10 ISO, you need prepare it, this is especially important for Windows 7 users..

After obtaining the .iso file you can use the built in Disc Image burning tool or Microsoft .iso to USB/DVD tool to
create a bootable DVD or USB (requires a blank DVD or USB flash stick of at least 4 GB).

But later in the example with images, you just run the Win 10 setup into a Win 7 PC like a simple installation.

Does that mean that you have to burn the ISO into a blank DVD to make it work? Can't i make the same thing by mounting an image into a virtual drive?

I work on a number of computers that can't boot USB so I use my CD/DVD Burning program to create the bootable DVD from that .iso file.

The file could be bootable, try first burning to DVD and find out if it can boot. If not, there is a utility called Plop Boot Manager that will allow any PC to boot from USB, independently of BIOS support. It is an ISO that you can burn to a CD and use it to boot the computer with. It then presents you with a custom boot loader that allows you to boot from every possible device on your computer, including USB DVD-ROM or USB hard disk or USB flash drive. This way you can first boot from that CD and then detect and chose your USB flash drive to boot and install Windows 10. It is ideal for old PCs that their BIOS supports boot from a CD-ROM but not from a DVD-ROM even if you have a DVD-RW drive connected. You can either use it to boot from the DVD-ROM or from a USB flash drive.

Well ImgBurn will burn an ISO file to DVD, but how can it make it bootable? The ISO file must contain bootable code in the first place. If you extract the boot sector from a bootable Windows 7 or higher DVD, you can use Nero (or other software) to add it to an ISO compilation in order to make it bootable. But first burn your ISO to disk and check it. It could already be bootable.

  12. The .iso file you download should already be bootable.

Make win 10 .iso file bootable DVD or USB

    Hi,

It's quite a clever piece of software. If the ISo does not contain boot code it will ask you if you want to use the current OS's boot code to make it bootable.
No problem with Win 10 OS ISO's as these are bootable as is.

    Cheers, *Wink
