Windows 10: Malware or drive failure? Machine is crippled

Discus and support Malware or drive failure? Machine is crippled in Windows 10 Support to solve the problem; I'm not sure if I have to do anything special to run a program off of a drive I'm not technically on... trying to launch mbam.exe is giving me a .dll... You should be able to run MBAM, update the definitions, select a custom scan, (select rootkits) and select your OS drive. I just checked with someone who did it three days ago, without issue. Did you verify the hash when you downloaded it?

EDIT: You're running it from the rescue media, right?

Ah, sorry, I tried to launch it from it's location on my actual hard drive - I'm not super familiar with how these bootable images relate to the rest of the PC. So, I redownload and install it?

No. You are in the WinPESE environment, right? Kyhi has loaded a bunch of software in there - one of them is Malwarebytes Antimalware. You should see a link on your desktop in the rescue environment. Just double click it to run - it's already there. Once it's opened, see if you can update the virus definitions, then select custom scan, select ROOTKITS, select your HDD with the OS partition, then run the scan.

Just so you understand: The WinPESE rescue environment is like a little, mini OS; it runs in your memory, and is completely gone, once you shutdown. It's the same as running a live Linux distro, if that helps.

I must have done something wrong.

I am in some kind of rescue media - I downloaded it from the link you gave me, mounted it and ran it off a usb.
I thought there might be something like MBAM provided and looked for it when I got in here, but I don't see that.

I see shortcuts like Acronis True Image, BootIce, Recuva, etc (quite a few more).

I'm really not as ignorant as it may be beginning to seem lol - I'm not familiar with tools like this.

I guess I was supposed to extract the boot.wim?

No, no - not at all. *Smile You're just running a light OS in temp. memory. The MBAM program is already installed in the environment. No need to extract anything. Just double-click on the MBAM icon on your desktop in the rescue environment, and it should run.

    haha thanks.

I'm just saying the icon doesn't exist, and the only thing I have in E:/sources is boot.wim

(My desktop is also different - it's orange and yellow geometry).

Okay - you downloaded the wrong one - you got the W8, and we need the W10. It will have a blue desktop with a wolf on it, as I posted in the picture. So sorry. Please download the correct one and we'll continue.

Ok, I'm in the right one now with an updated MBAM.

I expected to be able to direct it to a specific drive or something, but I just had choices between the types of scans (I did select to search for root kits in the settings).
It's currently taking it's time searching for updates again for some reason as a first step.

I am not sure; there may be some minor limitations using it in this manner. (I haven't done it myself *Eek)
