Malware or drive failure? Machine is crippled

Note to self: read the descriptions *Think

I suspect something may be awry with this, the check for updates step has been running for 13 minutes...

Edit: restarting it a few times got it going for some reason.

I imagine this will take a while (I selected both hard drives) so I will come back again tomorrow unless it miraculously finishes in the next hour or so.

    I really appreciate the help!

Malware or drive failure? Machine is crippled

Update: Upon waking up I was surprised to find it on the same drive still - 27,517 objects scanned... seems slow?

Hmmm...did it go to sleep while you were sleeping? *Wink If we can't get this scan finished in a reasonable amount of time, I will suggest a different Rescue Disk, which scans outside the W10 OS. I see it's been 4 hours since you posted - any results?

    Hahah

I just called my wife on lunch and she said it's still on the same drive, something like 36000 objects scanned.

Would the chkdsk detect this kind of speed issue - if it is one?
This is basically what I saw when trying to use the advanced reatoration features - everything was taking forever.

Hmm...Maybe we might try a different approach when you get home....

We can boot to the Kaspersky Rescue Media and run that scan.

Next, we could run SeaTools on the drive to see if it is "failing". CHKDSK does not address all SMART attributes of a drive. Some values could be failing soon, but not yet. We are talking a spinner here, and not SSD, right?

    Ya, it's not an SSD.

Do you boot off of Kaspersky in the same way? It didn't see an OS

Edit; trying again with the installation instructions

Yes, you boot the computer to it, just like you did the rescue media.

I'm still fighting with this one. I installed it to the USB like the directions say, but I'm getting a boot error.

    Ok.
I tried to install it to USB a second time - same results. I get "boot error" in the dos screen, when manually selecting to boot from there.

My first boot priority is a removable drive, but it isn't going there on its own.

I don't understand why you can boot to Kyhi's rescue media on the USB stick and not this one....doesn't make sense to me....but maybe one of the other ones will succeed.

EDIT: Perhaps switching to Legacy mode/turning off Fast Boot (if it even exists) in the BIOS will help?

Ok, running the exe as an admin did the trick.
I'm currently running the disk recover
