So, what happened is that when I extracted the folder and ran the .exe file, a small window popped up and closed quickly, and the .exe disappeared from the folder. Note: there were 2 .exe files, and I stupidly clicked both. Before I realized the threat, the damage was already done. Some of my accounts were hacked, and although

Defender Periodic Scanning or Offline Scanning?

That link does suggest it's useful to use Defender offline scanning in addition to periodic scanning and a third party real time anti virus (e.g. Kaspersky).

    Hi,

To further assist you with your concern with Windows Defender, follow the steps below:

    • Open the Run window by pressing Window + R button.
    • Then type services.msc and hit "Enter".
    • Look for Windows defender service in the list and right click on it and select start.
    • Once Windows defender is opened try to do the offline scan on that window.

Let us know how it goes.

    Windows Defender Offline Scan

I’ve read occasional complaints in the forum about Windows Defender Offline (WDO) causing issues or not working properly since I first joined the forum in 2010.

    See

Recommend you note the posts of

    GlenProuty
who has been posting about issues with WDO since last year…maybe you’ll find something in his two posts that will help you use WDO if that’s what you want to. Be sure your documents/music/pics, etc are
backed up in case you need to reset the computer after using WDO.

Alternatively if you're having malware issues suggest you run two or more of the following scanners: List
