  1. Malwarebytes PUP scanning lists legitimate programs as threats

I have been using Malwarebytes version 3 for some until it some of my legitimate programs as Threats ie Advanced System Care 10,Freemake Video Converter,Freesmith Video Player.I had to manually uncheck loads of files that i wanted to keep and add folders to exclusions...but it still showed some files on all programs as threats...one particular program Freemake Video Converter now and then have small updates..Malwarebytes quarantined the update package and when Freemake tried to update the whole program was quarantined so i could not use it.

Because of the rigid PUP scanning i have not renewed my license...and use Hitman Pro and Spybot Search and Destroy instead and the above mentioned programs run perfectly

    :)

    Pups

Most AV programs do not provide scans for PUPs. PUPs are potentially unwanted programs but are not necessarily malware. For example, if you download a program and it also installs another program, the program that you did not explicitly install is considered
a PUP, even if it is a completely legitimate program, like, for example, Google Chrome. PUPs are often malware, however. If you take BonziBUDDY as an example. It's adware, spyware, a trojan, and a PUP. Considering Malwarebytes is working for you, I would suggest
you keep running scans until none show up any longer. Sometimes, when you have a large amount, the scan does not catch everything in a single scan. It seems as if Malwarebytes is removing the PUPs, so you should be fine just using that.

  3. MALWARE ATTACK 20th January 2017

It is not related to some sort of cyber-attack.

A Potentially Unwanted Program (PUP) is a very broad threat category which
can encompass any number of different programs to include those which are benign as well as problematic. Thus, this type of detection does not always necessarily mean the file is malicious or a bad program. PUPs in and of themselves are not always bad...many
are generally known, non-malicious but unwanted software usually containing
    adware
or bundled with other free third-party software as a
common practice by legitimate vendors to include toolbars, add-ons/plug-ins and browser extensions. PUPs are considered unwanted because they can cause undesirable system performance or other problems and are sometimes installed without the
user's consent since they are often included when downloading legitimate programs. However,
some users may intentionally install programs with PUP characteristics because they are
willing to trade-off the undesirable effects for the benefits provided by using them.

PUPs may also be defined somewhat differently by various security vendors and may or may not be detected/removed based on that definition. That fact adds to confusion and a lot of complaints from end users asking why a detection was not made
on a particular file (program) they are having issues with.
Malwarebytes has an aggressive PUP Policy
and has even taken a tougher stance...see

    here
    .

Malwarebytes PUP scanning lists legitimate programs as threats

    Hi there

PUP's are almost IMPOSSIBLE to detect these days until a few victims get caught and then the PUP DB can be updated.

My whole view on the WHOLE A/V industry is that it is totally passed it's sell by date -- at least as far as Domestic consumers are concerned -- these sorts of A/V products are just trying to solve C20 problems in C21 --

You are far better off just DITCHING all this stuff, use M/s Windows defender and above all use BRAIN --99% of scams these days are so well organised that they rely on the "Stupidity of the User" -- and none of these would ever be caught out by Software.

I read Daily in the world's press about how people are swindled daily out of large amounts of money by silly things such as replying to phone texts or emails purported to be from Banks / lawyers etc --why on earth do these people never phone up the REAL Bank's phone number rather than just reply to the number in the text / email.

For once I actually agree with the Banks (Ist time EVER !!!!!) that if people reply to dubious texts etc and transfer money without checking first by actually phoning their bank --preferably from a different phone -- then they DESERVE to lose their money..

My computer pet hate these days are "I.T Security experts" who probably are basically so "Un Streetwise" that they wouldn't even know how to organise a Prayer meeting in the Vatican or a boozeup in a Brewery.

Note here I'm just referring to HOME computers --corporate networks have different issues to deal with.

    Cheers

In MB 2 and MB 3 you have 3 choices for PUPs.

    Treat as Malware.
    Warn User
    Ignore

    Check you settings.

I personally am not going to get involved in beating this dead horse on any other sites including this one. If you do not understand WHY it is labeled as a PUP "legitimate program or not" then no matter how it is explained or who it is explained by will make no difference to you and others complaining.
