Windows 10: Many Desktop Icons on PC are Being Overwritten by OneDrive Desktop Synch

I didn't see a OneDrive section, so will add it here. I just got back from a week vacation and this morning I noticed a lot of my desktop icons are no longer showing the proper icon jpg, txt, doc, pdf, etc and instead are showing a mini white preview which makes it a lot more difficult to find things based on the extention eg, the red Adobe .pdf stands out from the MS Word .doc, etc. From my research I found it's linked to OneDrive and it's "Back up Folders on this Device" manager. Unchecking backing up the desktop, removes them from the current desktop but still has them in the desk

OneDrive: Lost desktop icons, now in OneDrive

Windows 10 Pro
Synched my Desktop to OneDrive now all my laptop icons are gone into OneDrive.
I'd like to keep my desktop populated with all my files, etc. and also synched to OneDrive.
How an I do this. Thanks

 

Remove Linux Desktop Icons

I am not sure whether this will work (Ubuntu does not have icons like that on the desktop by default), but I suggest opening the trash bin and sweeping the icons into the window showing the trash bin.

 

OneDrive Sync altered many desktop files

ok...I got that part now about files needing to be in the local OneDrive folder in order to synch automatically..Though it seems i cant upload any files from my pc to my online OneDrive. Even those in the OneDrive local folders

There still remains the issue of those Protected Folders-Desktop and Documents-not synching as they should--as suggested by that screenshot-whereby I cannot stop and start the synching process. The Desktop and Documents rectangles remain not selected--regardless of what I do
