  3. Windows 10 Install problems

I want to thank everyone who responded; seems like Microsoft did not do a good job of making the w7 upgrade to w10 a seamless and easy process.

And that is very frustrating if your trying to get all types of devices to run W10. Maybe that's why Google's Chromebooks , are taking market share at the low end of the scale but I would think that they will just move up and feed.

    Again,

thanks, and I am very disappointed in Microsoft for making this difficult.

    Windows 10 Networking Problem

I have 4 computers, all assigned to “Workgroup.”

3 are W7. 1 is a new W10, just purchased. All are visible to each other in File Explorer.

The 3 W7 machines all connect with each other, successfully sharing files and network printers.

The new W10 machine connects with 2 of the W7 machines, sharing files and network printers.

When I try to connect to the remaining W7 machine from the W10 machine, I get a path not found error (x80070035).

Diagnosis of the error gives the following info:

"File and print sharing resource ([W7 machine in question]) is online but isn't responding to connection attempts. The remote computer isn't responding to connections on port 445, possibly due to firewall or security policy settings."

I checked the Windows firewall on both the W7 and W10 machines. Private and public inbound rules for file and print sharing (NB-Session-in and SMB-in) are enabled.

I turned off the firewall on both the W7 and W10 machines. No difference.

Finally I turned off antivirus for both the W7 and W10 machines. No difference.

    I'm stumped.

    Hi Ed

I think the ever so slight raise in Windows 7/8.1 may be due to a few like me who have gone through the pain of going back. Windows 10 forced downloads of store apps (in my opinion turning Windows 10 into adware) was just a step too far, I'm very suspicious of any company that decides how your hard drive should be filled without your consent. I'm now playing a waiting game see where it goes.

Given that all new PC's now come with Windows 10 I find the steadiness of Windows 7/8.1 very telling

I Must say it's refreshing to be back on Windows 7, looks nicer, plays nicer it's just nice.

I could not agree more. I wish you could uninstall every Metro app, it's unfortunate that some are welded in ...

For once the NetMarketShare and USA Government Analytics seem to show the same thing, although the 1% drop in XP usage this month is as artefactual as the 0.5% rise reported by NetMarketShare concerning the July figures.

Windows 10 rate of uptake is slowing now the free Upgrade is perceived to be over, and Windows 7 and 8.1 are showing a corresponding slowing rate of decline - may be due to reversion to prior OS once the digital entitlement/license has been obtained for Windows 10 for that PC.

The rates of decline for XP and Vista are now steeper than they have been lately, although it will take some sales data from OEMs, MS and official outlets to determine how this is made up from corporate or domestic repurposing or new PC sales.

Since the beginning of the year, the overall change from July to August is much less than any other previous pair of months:
