Windows 10: Maximize/Restore Down Button

A few days ago, my Maximize/Restore Down Button stopped working in Word. When I click to Restore Down my Word document, instead of the window getting smaller, I get the little "window" shown below.I have tried everything to get the Restore Down window but can't figure it out. I'm able to Restore Down all the other applications--Excel, PowerPoint, etc.,-- but not Word. I'm sure there is an easy fix for this--HELP!

maximize/ restore button not working in any programs opened in windows 10

all programs open in maximized or full screen mode

can't unmaximize window by clicking on maximize/ restore button (the middle button with the 2 overlapping squares, upper right side of each window)

the minimize (-) and close (x) button do work

 

Windows won't maximize

• Were you able to see the maximize, minimize and close icons?
• Have you tried to perform these using different user account?

This issue might be due to corrupted/ missing system files.

I suggest you to run System File Checker and check if it helps:

Method 1: Run the SFC.

System File Checker is a utility in Windows that allows users to scan for corruptions in Windows system files and restore corrupted files.

Follow the below steps:

• 
  Right click on the Start button, click on
  Command Prompt (Admin).
  
• 
  Type “sfc /scannow” without quotes and hit
  Enter.
  
• 
  After the scan, restart the computer.
  
• 
  Now check for the issue.

Missing icons / buttons after System Restore

Hi Terrie,

To address your concern, we suggest that you try to undo the restore or pick another restore point.

Please follow these steps to access system restore:

• Right-click (or press and hold) the Start button, and then select Control Panel.
  
• Search Control Panel for Recovery.
  
• Select Recovery > Open System Restore > Next.
