Windows 10: MBAM Premium and NS 2016 Side by Side?

Discus and support MBAM Premium and NS 2016 Side by Side? in AntiVirus, Firewalls and System Security to solve the problem; I'm thinking of running MBAM Premium and Norton Security 2016 (v22.6.0) side by side. Will that work? Should I exclude any of MBAM's files from NS?... Discussion in 'AntiVirus, Firewalls and System Security' started by SoFine409, Jun 18, 2016.

I'm thinking of running MBAM Premium and Norton Security 2016 (v22.6.0) side by side. Will that work? Should I exclude any of MBAM's files from NS? Anything that I need to do with the NS firewall as well as add MBAM to Norto's safe search sites list?

  2. KB3140741 - how the heck do I uninstall this ****?

    1. Yes.

    2. ‎January ‎26, ‎2016

    3. Installed MBAM premium as a precaution - no particular reason. Installation date is March ‎7, ‎2016.

Don't recall it ever detecting or placing anything into quarentine.

    Thanks.

    3. Did you know that Avast acquired AVG in 2016?

    4. Are you running MBAM Premium v3.x (paid or free-trial), MBAM Premium v2.x, or MBAM Free?

MBAM Premium and NS 2016 Side by Side?

Been running MBAM Premium and NS for years with no problems. I don't exclude anything as they will block each other from accessing their files. Just enable Self Protection in MBAM and Tamper Protection in Norton.
Malwarebytes is already listed as safe in safe search.

I have NS 2016 22.6. and MBAM 2.2.1 working on 3 home PCs without any issues. I have not specifically excluded any NS files from MBAM and vice versa.

  7. Hi, @SoFine409:

Yes, @Phone Man and @Beaupeep are correct: strictly speaking, mutual exclusions are not necessary for most users on most systems. If everything is working OK for you without them, then you may wish to forego that step.

If, like some other users, you do wish to proactively set them, the attached screen cap shows how to add the AV folder to MBAM exclusions (it shows Kaspersky, but the concept is the same.)
And the MBAM files to exclude in Norton are listed below.

BTW, re: MBAM Self-Protection. This feature does provide an additional layer to protect MBAM's own files from malware modification. Just be aware that enabling Self-Protection will prevent you from renaming/moving/deleting the desktop shortcut icon for MBAM, altering some of the settings, can prevent a clean uninstall and can (sometimes) interfere with other Malwarebytes software products. More information about MBAM Self-Protection here and here.
It's entirely up to the user whether or not to enable that particular setting.*Smile

    Cheers,
    MM
    ---------------------

Please exclude the following files from your Antivirus Software for your version of Windows:

For 32-bit versions of Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8 & Windows 10:
    • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbam.exe[/*]
    • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbamdor.exe[/*]
    • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbampt.exe[/*]
    • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbamservice.exe[/*]
    • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbamresearch.exe[/*]
    • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbamscheduler.exe[/*]

For 64-bit versions of Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 10:
    • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbam.exe[/*]
    • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbamdor.exe[/*]
    • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbampt.exe[/*]
    • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbamresearch.exe[/*]
    • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbamservice.exe[/*]
    • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware \mbamscheduler.exe[/*]
Note: If you are using a software firewall besides the built in Windows Firewall, you'll need to exclude MBAM.EXE, MBAMSERVICE.EXE and MBAMRESEARCH.EXE from it, as well.

Note: Once that's done, please make sure that if either of those programs has any sort of web filter, that you add the following as a trusted site:
    Code: data-cdn.mbamupdates.com[/quote]

MBAM Premium and NS 2016 Side by Side?

Thanks very much to Phone Man, Beaupeep, and MoxieMomma for the advice.
Since my subscription to Norton expires next month I'm thinking of not renewing and going with Defender and MBAM Premium. I've noticed that many folks do this. Any opinions on this strategy?

  9. Hi:

    You are most welcome, @SoFine409.
    I'm glad I could help.

As for the choice of AV, there are many fine options, both free and paid.
Each has its share of fans and detractors.
Ultimately, it's up to each user to select the AV that best suits the user's preferences, computer system, computing practices, budget, etc.
And no one security application or group of applications can protect 100% of computers from 100% of malware 100% of the time.
Practicing "safe hex" is probably the most critical component.*Wink

    Cheers,
    MM

(P.S. I have been using KIS + MBAM Premium + MBAE Premium for years on all my Vista/7 systems and plan to do the same with my new Win10 system, once I get it unpacked.)

MoxieMomma is 100% correct in her advice above. I have had absolutely no issues running MBAE/MBAM Premium with Norton Security. I did add the same exclusions, just in case, even if they may not be necessary. Better to be safe than sorry right.

As far as just using Defender goes, I've heard many say that it's fine as long as you use common sense and are careful about what you download or what sites you go to.

I personally want a paid, highly regarded Internet security suite but in reality just being careful is your number one defense against viruses/malware.

IMHO, and this is only my opinion, any current AV/Firewall solution will be good enough. Windows Defender and Firewall + MBAM + MBAE will certainly suffice. 3rd party vendors offer solutions that provide more features for extra money. Which one is right for you is your call.

I believe the best "AV" is the user. Just follow some simple rules and you'll be safe no matter which security solution you use:

    a) Do not click on suspicious links in emails, pop up banners or ads in your browser.
    b) Do not open unexpected attachments/files that come in via email from known or unknown persons. Sometimes viruses can propagate themselves using a mail account on infected PCs. Be especially careful of ransomware.
    c) Use strong passwords and change them at regular intervals. I highly recommend using a password manager for e.g. Lastpass, Dashlane, Roboform and others.
    d) Check for a secure connection with the website i.e. https:// and a valid site certificate in your browser before entering any personal data for e.g. username + password or credit card details.
    e) Last, but not the least, backup your data regularly if not frequently.

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers!
