What is Mcafee AV? I use Mcafee but I don't know what the AV is.

 

Microsoft Defender, Mac Afee (need help)

I have the same problem. I have run the McAfee removal tool twice (a time consuming task with re-starting...) but the problem remains. Defender says that real-time protection is handled by another AV program butIhave no other AV.

Frustrated with McAfee...

I found out about it over at Malwarebytes Forums, and thought that maybe someone here would be interested.
I'm pretty much a sworn Windows Defender user, which is enough for my habits(for questionable or unknown sites, I always have my virtual machines*Wink)

 

Well. I have just installed it.

These are my impressions so far.

PROs:
- Very lightweight. It uses almost no cpu cycles and 10MB- memory.

CONs:
- It seems to be at a very basic state. There's almost nothing to configure.
- Very spartan layout/interface. It resembles Windows Defender a lot. Unfortunately some of the typographic fonts used are too small and not easily read.
- No context entry for right-click menu -> Scan with...
- No custom scans either. When you click on the SCAN vutton, it starts scanning without allowing the user what to scan.

Right now I am using it as main real-time scanner with WD enabled too for periodic scans (second opinion).

I will now test running Steam, some other apps and games to see how it behaves.

 

Truthfully with an AV, you only need to thoroughly scan at the initial install, after that, the real time protection "should" keep you safe.
This is why there are malware scanners, for the second opinion and to check for things an AV might not protect against.
But also Windows has other protections than Defender, that runs alongside any AV, such as Smart Screen.

 

Well. I have been running it for a while but I have seen some noticeable slowdowns when launching certain applications. I will keep it under my radar, but I have returned to good ole' WD for now. I would like to know how this AV would perform under some modest pc, even under a single core processor. It could be a good candidate for old or not-so-hefty hardware.

 

Hello people.

I tried this tiny AV for the second time and I have found a major issue for me in it. It detected and moved to quarantine a legit software (false positive), but although I could restore it from quarantine, it got deleted again everytime I launched it. I wasn't able to find any "whitelist" option.

 

Well that doesn't sound good for the user. It's a pain to have to send the AV developer and/or the "offending" software dev an email and warn them. No not good at all, specially when it's something you use often.
