Windows 10: Media Creation Tool goes back to build 10240!

Using the ISO you do not need to go from 8 to 8.1*Wink

 

Neither SP1 for Windows 7 nor Window 8.1 is required for the free upgrade. Non-SP1 Windows 7 and Windows 8.0 upgrades just fine to Windows 10.

 

Just checked with Microsoft and the Surface Pro 2 actually has Windows 8.1 Pro. Never used them so don't remember which Windows 8.x Pro it came with.

Interesting, mine didn't, 2 Desktops and 4 Notebooks with Win7 and Win8.

 

After I said that, it reminds me that I have a ASUS G73S that I completely disassembled 4 years ago meaning took every screw and component out that came with Windows 7 Home Premium before I even turned the machine on. Was planning to run FreeBSD/Linux on it. In any case, looks like that machine, I will either have to put it back together and put the original HD back in to update to Windows 10 before July 29, 2016 unless there is another way to register the key with Microsoft.

It won't show up in Windows Update, but you can use either the Media Creation Tool or ISO downloaded from Tech Bench.

 

Thanks, Cliff. I in fact did have hibernate enabled when I took the upgrade to 10586. I normally had it disabled after I installed my 850 EVO - I must have experimented with it some time later and forgot to disable it again - hence, the reinstatement of fast startup upon upgrade to 10586. There were a few other things changed back during the upgrade but nothing that others haven't already mentioned and that were no more than a minor annoyance.
