Windows 10: Media Creation Tool Question. How often does the build change ?

I wondered if the Windows version offered by the Media Creation Tool is updated to reflect the release of cumulative updates and bug fixes ?

In other words, if I download the tool today, will I get a later version of the Creators Update than was originally offered at launch ?

Reason for asking is that I will no doubt be doing a clean install for a friend and I still have my original installation media. Is it worth creating new or not ?

Sure, this is an option. Download the MCT on another PC, create the installation drive there, and then plug the newly created media into the PC you want to upgrade. All the files needed for Windows 10 Setup will be on the flash drive.

In the entire cycle between versions 1607 and 1703, the MCT was updated once by Microsoft. It went from build 14393.0 to build 14393.497 (or something like that). As long as your media is for the current major build - 15063, I would not bother downloading a new one. It's always just 1 cumulative update away from being current anyway.

 

I honestly hadn't thought of it like that, so yes that makes sense.

Yes, and if you feel you may need a .iso for an earlier version it's worth keeping the old MCTs. I recently wanted a .iso for 10240 and the very first MCT made one for me. You can tell the MCTs apart by their build number in the file's Properties > Details.
