Windows 10: Media Creation Tool question

I plan on doing a clean install. My question is do I still need to upgrade to windows 10 first or can I just enter the windows 7 key during the clean install of windows 10?

Sure, this is an option. Download the MCT on another PC, create the installation drive there, and then plug the newly created media into the PC you want to upgrade. All the files needed for Windows 10 Setup will be on the flash drive.

Can I do the download and USB setup on a different computer then the one I want to do a clean reinstall on. The computer I am using seems to keep having an error at 50%. I was wondering if I can set it up on a different computer and then plug it into this
one. Will that work or does the Media Creation Tool pull some needed info off of my computer during setup of the usb drive?

Hey mate,

You will need to do the free upgrade first so that the activation will be locked on your PC. Afterwards, you'll be able to do a clean install on the PC anytime you like, and have it automatically activated.

So our best bet is to do the upgrade first, and then try a clean install for subsequent installs...if I am understanding correctly.

Can you upgrade using media creation tool? On my other laptop I didn't reserve is it possible to upgrade using that.

 

Anyway to change architectures? I want to go from 64 bit to 32 bit for windows 10.

 

Yes, but only after you do your free upgrade. Afterwards, you should be able to clean install 32-bit or 64-bit. *Smile

 

Yes, but Windows 10 will not be activated going that route until you purchase Windows 10, and activate the installation with the included key.

Your best bet would be to reserve your free copy, then upgrade to Windows 10 when notified. *Smile

I did read that you could use Windows OEM or Retail key not a MSDN key or not an oem-slp to do a clean install. As long as that key has been activated for 24 hours. Microsoft noted that they haven't got all Widows 7 or 8 OEMs or Retail keys added but are working on it. One site reported they tried that with windows 7 or 8.1 keys and it didn't work.

I think you can always upgrade via windows update, get the key from showkey, use that key to do a clean install but I don't know for sure if that will work.

 

When you upgrade with the free reserved copy from the GWX app on an activated Windows 7 or 8.1 PC, Windows 10 has a generic key included that will activate it.

If you clean or upgrade install Windows 10 without doing the above first, Windows 10 will not be activated.

Once you’ve upgraded to Windows 10 using the USB drive or DVD, and use that to upgrade your device or reinstall after you’ve upgraded.
