Windows 10: Media Creation Tool won't offer Windows 11 2023 Update for a couple of weeks

Microsoft released the 2023 feature update for Windows 11 this week and it is already available via Windows Update and the Update Assistant. Windows users and administrators who prefer installation media can download ISO images of Windows 11 version 23H2 already, but not with the help of the Media Creation Tool.

Installation media is useful in many regards. It allows administrators to install and upgrade Windows 11 on as many devices as they want without downloading data each time. It is also helpful when it comes to modifying installation media or in offline situations.

Windows administrators who download the Windows Media Creation Tool from Microsoft's website expect to download Windows 11 version 23H2, as it is listed at the top of the page. It states, at the very top "Download Windows 11 (Current release: Windows 11 2023 Update l Version 23H2).

Problem is, the Media Creation Tool can't be used to download the latest version of Windows 11, as it still delivers Windows 11 version 22H2 when used.



When asked about it on Twitter, Microsoft employee Gabe Frost provided the following answer: "There’s a package size optimization underway for 23H2 with MCT. Rough ETA is a couple weeks ~11/15"

Microsoft expects to update the Media Creation Tool in about two weeks, so that it delivers the Windows 11 version 23H2 feature update to users who run it.

For now, Windows users may download ISO images for x64 versions of Windows. The "Download Windows 11 Disk Image (ISO) for x64 devices" works and offers Windows 11 2023 Update downloads. Note that you need to specify the right language before the download. Choosing the wrong language will result in installation errors, e.g., when selecting English U.S. but the system is in English UK.

Closing Words

Microsoft should add a note to the official download page for its Windows 11 operating system to inform users that the Media Creation Tool can't be used to download Windows 11 version 23H2 yet. Customers do have options to download ISO images directly from the same website.

Media Creation Tool not working March 2023

The March 2023 Windows 10 update messed up my PC and got stuck in an auto-repair loop. Tried everything and some more, no dice. No going back to previous restore points, no rolling back of last update no nothing. So I decided to make a new bootable repair disc using Microsoft's Media Creation Tool. Bought a brand-new 64 GB flash drive, downloaded and installed MCT. First step went OK, second step, installing, got stuck at 50% and mentioned something went wrong, error code 0x800700B7 - 0xA001B. Something was already installed on the drive, so I deleted and reformatted the drive. Then I tried again with some tricks like activating some Windows services, disabling anti-virus etc, copying the MCT onto the drive and start installation from there. Nada, nic, nothing; same problem at 50%. So switched to a brand new (one week old) HP laptop and tried to make the repair drive there. The error message did not pop up yet, but its already half an hour stuck on the 50% mark. So the W10 March 2023 update messed up my OS and cannot repair itself and the MCT does not work so I cannot make a repair drive to get this PC back to work. Any suggestions?

 

Media Creation Tool question

Hi, I have never had any problems using the Media Creation Tool to perform a Windows 10 clean installation until yesterday so I have a couple of questions.
1. The tutorial here says after going to the Microsoft site and selecting the Download Tool (Media Creation Tool) option that the Media Creation Tool should be save to the PC and run from there.
On Microsoft site the instructions are to Download the Tool and select Run (no saving to the PC). Is there a reason for saving it to the PC first as suggested on Tenforums?

2. Yesterday I used the Media Creation Tool to do a clean install. Everything went fine with the download. After the two hour download the Media Creation Tool automatically started to create the media. Everything working normally so far..then suddenly at 50% a screen popped up with an unexpected error message Error code beginning 0x80004005. That was it I had to stop there.
After searching the net it seems that other people have had the same issue after the Fall Creators Update...with the installation stopping at 50%. I have no idea how to sort this out. After contacting Microsoft Chat Support they didn't offer any suggestions that worked either.
Can anyone advise please

Version 1903 should be available in approx. in 2 weeks, the Media Creation tool will be updated as soon as 1903 is released
