Media Player won't play .wmv clips correctly

I have windows media player (MP) on a win10-2004 desktop that won't play .wmv clips correctly. VLC plays them fine, and the clips can be imported to a video editor and it plays them fine as well. So the problem appears to be with mp.

By won't play correctly, I mean that when the wmv clip is opened (rt-click on file, choose open or open with media player) the visual component in the UI is blank/black, but the audio is playing fine.
That same MP plays mp4/mod/mpg files correctly (visual and audio), and audio files in formats of mp3, wma, mid, wav also correctly.

So, what's wrong with MP that it won't play a wmv file?

screenshot of the MP user interface and details attached. In the screenshot, there 2 video clip icons, both mp4, and MP plays them both properly.

    :)

Win10-2004 media player will not play wmv file

Attached a screenshot list of players as requested:

    Commentary:

    1. Normally I would use media player for wmv files. And selecting from an extensive archive of music, clicking the music file (mp3/wma/mid/wav) works fine in MP. It also does work (plays imagery/audio) for saved .mod/.mp4 video clips. MP just doesn't
seem to work (play the imagery) for wmv clips.

    2. Since you drew my attention to it, I noted that the Films & TV player is in this context players list. So I tried that player on both the wmv files showing in the explorer folder, and got the same result as for MP - black visual screen but playing sound.

    3. both these wmv files open correctly in VLC and when imported into a video editor (Power Director 18).

    4. So it's pretty clear that something is wrong with the media player/Films &TV programs regarding playing a wmv video clip. A screenshot of the properties of the highlighted clip is:

The win10 PC was migrated in place (the MS upgrade recommendation) from a win7 platform several months ago. And the migration deleted some MS win7 programs (games) that required re-install after the migration was over. That also happened when I recently
did a feature upgrade to 2004, just plain annoying of MS to do that when it was happily installed under win10-1909. So is it feasible that the media player that's on this win10-2004 platform is the wrong one for win10? version details of it in the screenshot
    posted previously.

problem playing some .wmv video clips in my C7..

    Hello dear friends;

I just bought my new Nokia C7 mobile, everything is fantastic, i like this delightful device.. it has great many new features.. but i couldn't play some .wmv video clips.

I'm just wondering if there is a good media player need to install in mobile for playing this kind of format video clips.

    thanks.. :smileyhappy:

Win10-2004 media player will not play wmv file

    Hi Davidk03,

Could you send a screenshot of the list of players available on your pc? Right-click on the WMV file then select Open with. You will see there the list of players that can open that file. If you want the file to open automatically on Windows Media Player. Right-click
again on the wmv file> select properties> On the General tab click the change button under open with> Then select Windows Media Player on the list> click Apply then Ok.

Please let me know the result on your end.

    Best regards,

    Van
