Windows 10: Media server problems after October update

Hello!

I have been using my Win10 pc as a media server from my Sharp Smart tv.

However since the October update my tv could not see the pc as a media server.

I have just gone through the reset process on my pc, now I can see the pc as a "media server" from the tv.

But I can only see the directories, when I open the directories no files are displayed.

I have checked that media streaming is turned on, I have made sure that the correct folders are in place in Media Player, and streaming is enabled.

If I try and cast a jpg to my tv I get "Invalid command format".

I don't really want to install "third party Media server software" such as Serviio, Plex etc.


Is there a simple way to fix this issue?

Windows October 2018 update problems

Hello.

The Windows 10 October Update has a lot of problems with lost files. So much so that Microsoft took it off the installation media list and has pulled it from updates in general for now.

If you can, I suggest reverting the update entirely.

What apps were lost? You may find them in windows.old.

For settings, you will have to reset them yourself (unless you have a restore point)

 

Media/File Server on the cheap

Hey guys,

My PC is currently filling up and i have 4 HDDs.

I use my PC as a media server as well as a gaming rig.

What I want/need to do is build an external enclosure/rig that is cheap money wise and effective as a file/media server that is DNLA compliant. It would be nice to be able to run my Usenet through it and control it via web interface and remote connect. I would use Linux if a step by step guide is available for setting up the DNLA server and such as well.

This is my first foray into this field of PCs. Help please! ^_^
