    Media streaming problems

Since I got the upgrade to Windows 10, Media player has been at best quirky at worse totally useless. Originally I could stream media to my televisions but any editing I did in media player was not reflected in the DLNA client on the TV, for example genres that had been deleted or changed still appeared in the list. I tried deleting the media player database with no change, I reinstalled media player and now I cant stream anything at all. The server shows up on my TV with the proper categories but the list is always empty. I have turned on streaming, shared the files and added them to the media player database. Since the primary reason for this PC is to stream media to TVs in my house I am very disappointed, is there anyone who might have another idea that I haven't tried ?

    :)

Unable to turn on media sharing windows 10

Try typing media sharing or media streaming into Cortana. Brought up Media Streaming Options for me which is under the Network and Internet as part of the Network and Sharing center. Activated it and had no problems with my Roku reading it or the media
comp in the living room reading.

    Hi,

Thanks for the quick reply. Media streaming was already turned on in Windows Media Player and the problem persists.

    Media streaming problems

Well, I figured out the problem with the media not appearing on the client. Moving the external drive to a USB 2 port solved the issue. Funny thing is I never had problems with the port under Windows 8.1, when I checked the library it came back as unresponsive in media player, changing USB ports appears to have solved this issue. The hit I take in speed is not an issue so I can leave the drive on the slower port. Still working on the lack of updates to the streaming media information after changing it in media player.

Yet another update. The metadata issue appears to be connected with the indexing service. If I turn off indexing for the media folder the client side DLNA does not receive any metadata at all, no genres or duration, nothing just the file names. No edited data in media player appears at all even after selecting "Apply media information changes". However, at least files that have been deleted no longer show up in a search. This is getting very frustrating.

    Hi there

Did you remember to ENABLE MEDIA STREAMING in the settings -- In W10 it's turned off by default.
Have a look at some of the extra settings in POWER SETTINGS - there's some things about turning drives off, USB delays etc etc --it's all in the ADVANCED settings.

For Media streaming I'd suggest PLEX as a free one or for a small fee- seems quite good - use MEZZMO.

Remember also that it's possible the first time you use any Media streaming server it might have to re-build / refresh the library - and it might even do some transcoding on the fly when not necessary --this is usually the cause of jerky playback on DNLA devices. Check all the settings as these probably have all been reset on W10 install.

You shouldn't have to change USB Ports or whatever.

    Cheers

Yes, I did turn on streaming. As I said the problem of the media appearing was solved (for whatever reason) by moving my external drive to a USB 2 port. For the tags not updating properly, removing indexing from the media folder solved that problem but no tag information at all appears on the DLNA client now. I'll take a look at PLEX and MEZZMO, if they have the ability to properly sort the files on my TV then I'll use one of those.

I use Serviio on all my computers.

Simple to set up and use.
None of the fancy junk that slows your computer.
    Almost zero drag on resources.
    Customizable interface.
    Reliable.

    Hi there

Both Mezzmo and Plex when you connect to the TV show things like FOLDERS, FORMAT Types (Mp4 / AVI etc) Last Viewed etc. You need to try these --there's a load of good selection on the TV when you connect to either of these. They also play Audio -- Mezzmo also allows me to connect on the TV to my Logitech media server for a lot of AUDIO (FLAC) as well.

You need a 2MB/s minimum Wifi (or LAN) to stream video properly - faster is better. !!

TV episodes are usually names PROGRAMS01E01 for example and the subtitles (if any) need to be labelled PROGRAMS01E01.MP4(MKV.AVI).isl.srt (or eng.srt or whatever language you need).

Both MEZZMO and PLEX also can split into Movies, TV series etc --- very flexible and of course you can still browser by Folders too.

I tried SERVIIO but try as I might I can't get subtitles to work unless they are "burned in".

MEZZMO doesn't seem to have problems with subtitles. PLEX sometimes Works OK for subtitles.

Note -- I assume the OP wants to stream to REMOTE TV's rather than Computers.

    Cheers

Plex Media Server does a great job, a little heavy on the DLNA menu for mostly home videos but I can't find a setting that chooses the available sub-categories. However, this is something I can live with, the database is relatively small when the amount of information is considered. The streaming speed is not an issue, I have hardwired all the TVs so I get 100 Mbs ethernet connectivity, the limit for LG smart TVs. Thanks for the help, I have disabled media streaming on WMP and have set up a Plex server and all is working fine.

I can once again torture my guests with hundreds of vacation videos lol.
