Hi downloaded MediaCreationToolx64.exe and ran it. It was downloading successfully but due to unforeseen circumstances I had to abort it. I have tried to run it again but keeps telling me "There was a problem starting Setup. Close the tool, restart your PC, and then try running the tool again." restarting does not help. Could you please advise.

    :)

Yes, I am on a wireless connection. I'll try to change to a wired connection and follow your steps. Then see what happens.

What type of Internet connection are you on, wireless or wired? If you are on a wireless connection, try switching to a wired connection and attempt the download.

    Press Windows key + X

    Click Command Prompt (Admin)

At the command prompt, enter the following command, the hit Enter

    ipconfig/release

    then

    ipconfig/renew

    then

    ipconfig/flushdns

    exit the command prompt

    Press Windows key + R, type: %temp%

    Hit Enter

Delete contents of the temp folder

Restart your system and try downloading again.

If the problem persist, try resetting your router if you are connected one.

Power down the router, disconnect it, wait 10 mins

    Reconnect it, power up again

    Reconnect the Ethernet cable

    Try downloading again

Go to your downloads folder and look for the MediaCreationToolx64.exe file. Delete it and start over from scratch.

    Maybe try this:
Windows Update - Reset - Windows 7 Help Forums

I don't see much connection between Windows Update and MCT - but it won't hurt to try. Sometimes Windows complains when there are two setup processes trying to run simultaneously.

Ran the batch files rebooted but no joy - As I said originally the process was working until I aborted. Since then I keep getting the message "problem starting setup". I even tried restoring to an earlier date without any success.

Do you have another computer you can download the ISO with?

  10. There may be a couple of hidden folders associated with that tool. $Windows~BT$ and $Windows~WS$ I think. Look for and delete those then start over. They are where the download is temporarily stored.

Thank you $Windows~BT$ can be deleted but $Windows~WS$ says open in another program I think it's "application experience" tried stopping the service but that did not help. The download does seem to be going in the virtual machine but it's extremely slow.

Boot to Safe Mode and you should be able to delete $Windows~WS$.

Thank you will try safe mode. I have managed to download the 64bit ISO file in the virtual machine so no big panic. Will try on the windows 7 machine as you suggest and download the 32bit ISO. Again thank you very much

I had this but it was because i was on a user account, I moved to the admin account and all worked well. Might also be worth uninstalling your AV & Anti malware products just for the update.

Deleting the two files in safe mode fixed the problem. Many thanks much appreciated
