Metered Connection not preventing Windows from updating

    Hi,

I have a desktop and laptop both with Windows 10 Home.

Both computers have Ethernet and Wi-Fi set to metered connection.

Desktop updates must be manually approved by me to begin, but on my laptop, updates are still automatically being applied without my permission.

    How can I fix this?

    Thanks,

    Jeff

    :)

Does Windows 10 Home Edition include Local Group Policy Editor?

In a lower-bandwidth operating environment with Windows 10 Home, you can set your connection as "metered" to prevent Windows updates from installing in the background. Press the "Windows" key and type "WiFi," then click on your connection and set the "Metered
    Connection" switch to "Yes."

This will also prevent many other apps from using background data, too, which is a big plus for performance.

How to make the Windows Automatic Update on for metered connection

    Hi,

Metered connection prevents Windows from updating automatically.

If you set your connection as "metered", Windows won't automatically download necessary updates for Windows 10. You have to use an "unmetered connection" in order to install the updates. For more information on how to set up a metered connection on Windows
    10, click here.

Get back to us if you need further assistance.

Metered Connection not preventing Windows from updating

    Hey Jeff!

I too have 10 Home and from what I can tell, MS will download updates no matter if metered or not.
That said, they will only download and install updates that are pertinent to the security of the OS.

If you take a look at Settings - Updates and Security, it does say so in the middle of the of that window.

Since we, on Home edition, do not have the GPEDIT that Pro or Enterprise have, we have to live with this inconvenience. IF you don't mind changing a few settings every month, there are ways to manage when MS downloads those updates.
I have my own ways to do it but, it may be too inconvenient for you to apply these changes.

I will refer you to a site that I visit everyday for info on what and when to download and install MS updates.
You will also find ways to "correct" when updates are installed:

    Hey Flashorn,

Thanks for the reply. I understand certain important updates can be installed even on metered connection, but that is not what I'm referring to.

For example, last night I manually check for updates on both metered connection computers I have. Desktop asked for my permission before download and install, but my laptop just went ahead with the download and install without my approval.

It was the same update, so why did one computer ask for my permission (as it should on metered connection), but the other one did it without my approval?

    Thanks!

Desktop may be different since it's hard wired. I too have a notebook and yesterday checked for updates {as you can see in the screen shot} manually as well. It didn't ask for my permission either and it never had even though I too have it on a metered connection BUT it is also hard wired.

Even though MS asks for permission I don't think you can deny the installation of those security updates. I have long given up on trying to stop MS from installing updates that's why I have configured it to install updates Only when I want them too.

I don't have a better answer for you at the moment but, the site I referred you to in my last post could give you the answers you are looking for as that is all they do MS Updates and how to.

I just saw something in your profile. Are both W10 Pro or is one a Home ?

I have home edition as well but, it never asked me for permission.

When you say it asks for permission does it ask by displaying the User Account Control window in the middle of the screen?

I'm not sure. I just go to Settings > Update & Security and click the Check for Updates button. If there are some, it says it won't download them on metered connection until I approve (on my desktop).

I guess notebooks and desktops are different and the metered option is working as it should on your PC.
Are there any other differences in configurations on Windows that you did on the desktop that is not
    present on the notebook?

Metered Connection not preventing Windows from updating

I have Home and have looked at this question in detail.

First, make sure you haven't accidentally ticked the option that first appeared in 1709 to '...automatically download updates over metered data connections'.

Allow Automatic Updates over Metered Connections in Windows 10

Second, note that starting with 1703 there was a subtle change in the wording regarding metered connections. It now says...

Observation has shown that those updates deemed too urgent to wait for an unmetered connection include the Flash updates, but do not include the cumulative updates, as demonstrated in this screenshot. Note that the CU is awaiting you clicking Download, while the Flash update has already downloaded.

Subsequently I've only seen one other type of update download over a metered connection, updates for the Defender Antimalware Platform. That's an update for the Defender engine and UI itself, definitions updates do not download automatically on a metered connection.

How do I know if I ticked that option, and how to I unselect if I did?
