Windows 10: Microphone in taskbar

A little microphone popped up in the right corner of my taskbar and when I hover my mouse over it it says "Software Update is using your microphone". Is this common? Some sort of spyware? I did a scan with the free version of Malwarebytes and it didn't turn up anything.

Microphone Problems (Please Help)

Hi Larry,

We'd like to verify a few things in order for us to assist you effectively. Kindly confirm the following:

Were there any recent changes made to your computer prior to the issue? (Windows update, software or hardware installation, etc.)

• Do you get an error when you're trying to use your microphone?
• What is the make and model of your microphone?
• How did you install your microphone to your Windows 10 PC? Kindly verify if the steps below are the same as the steps you have performed:

To install a new microphone, follow these steps:

• 
  Right-click (or press and hold) the volume icon on the taskbar and select
  Recording Devices.
  
• 
  In the Recording tab, select the microphone or recording device you'd like to set up. Select
  Configure.
  
• 
  Select Set up microphone, and follow the steps of the
  Microphone Setup Wizard.
  

To test a microphone that has already been installed:

• 
  Right-click (or press and hold) the volume icon on the taskbar and select
  Recording Devices.
  
• 
  In the Recording tab, look for green bars rising as you speak into your recording device. If the bars are moving, your device is connected and working properly.

I understand that after an upgrade of Windows the microphone is not working, we will look in to this for you. However, in order to help you with the appropriate troubleshooting steps, please reply with the following details:

• What type of upgrade are you referring to, is it a system upgrade or an update?
  
• What is the complete model number of the tablet?
  
• Which build version of Windows 10 is installed on the computer? To check type:
  winver in the search bar on the Taskbar and hit Enter.

Few issues: intalling, microphone and taskbar

Thank you for posting your concern on Microsoft Community.

Before we start troubleshooting the issue, we require more information to assist you further.

• 
  Is your computer connected to a domain network?
  
• 
  Which software you are trying to install? What happens when you try to install?
  
• 
  What is the exact error message you are receiving?
  
• 
  Does the Microphone works on other applications?
  

I suggest you to run the System Maintenance troubleshooter and check if the Start Menu works every time on your computer. Follow the instructions provided below:

Method 1:

• 
  Press Windows + X key.
  
  
• Go to Control panel.
• In the search box, type Troubleshooter
  and then click Troubleshooting.
• Under System and Security,
  
• Click on System Maintenance and Click on Next button.
  

Also, follow the steps provided below and check if the Microphone works on Skype application.

Method 2: Restore drivers to default.

• 
  In taskbar, on system tray right click on volume icon.
  
• 
  Select Recording devices.
  
• 
  Under Recording tab. Right click on Microphone and select Properties.
  
• 
  Go to Advance tab.
  
• 
  Click on Restore to default.
