Windows 10: microphone is not working?

I am having trouble with my headset as it is not being recognised by my laptop as anything the speakers on the headset are working but the microphone. the only way i can get the speakers to work is by going through the default speaker device and only then are the speakers playing. but the microphone even when using the built in microphone button is not working.

Microphone is 'Not plugged in' when it is?

Just recently half way through a skype call my microphone just cut out and I've not been able to get it working again. This is not a skype problem as the microphone doesn't work in any program. Windows doesn't recognize that the headset is plugged in.
Playback audio is working fine with no problems just no recording audio. I have tried this headset on another laptop and the playback was fine and so was the recording. The headset is HyperX Clouds. I am on Windows 10. Does anybody have a fix for this problem?
They use the audio jacks on the front not USB.

You can run the Hardware and Devices troubleshooter by following the steps below:

1. Press Windows Key + R.

2. Type Control Panel.

2. Then type Troubleshooting in the search box and hit enter.

3. Select Hardware and Sound from the Troubleshooter Window.

4. Select Hardware and Devices.
