Windows 10: Microphone is not working???

Things I have done:

• Under Privacy I have turned ON access to all apps
• I have gone to Device Manager and uninstalled Microphone (Realtek) followed by a scan to hardware changes to reinstall followed by a restart of my computer
  • Version: 10.0.17134.1
• I have checked for updates under Device Manager
  • As well as computer wide as of 08/02/18
• Under Sound (Right Click on the sound icon) the Microphone is set as default
• Under Microphone Properties I have changed the level to Max and Boost to Max
• I have disabled all sound effects
• When I try speaking to Cortana, and go to the Speech Troubleshoot, I am unable to set up Microphone

Interestingly, Sound under System Settings is moving up and down. I have tried my Headset(s) on another computer and they both worked.


My Microphone on this computer has worked in the past. Lastly, I miss being able to ask Cortana questions and telling her about my day...

Built in microphone not working

I understand your concern and will assist you to resolve this issue.

I suggest you to follow the steps below and check if it helps

Method 1: I suggest you to set microphone as default device and check.

• 
  Right click on the volume icon in the system tray and then click "Recording devices"
  
• 
  Right click on the blank space in the popped up window and then select "Show Disabled Devices" and "Show Disconnected Devices".
  
• 
  Right click on Microphone and then click "Enable".
  
• 
  Highlight the microphone and then choose "Set as Default Device".
  
• 
  Click Apply and OK.
  

Step 2: Make sure that the Microphone is not disabled.

• 
  Make sure that the Microphone is not disabled. Follow the steps given to check that:
  
• 
  Right click on the volume icon and select “Recording devices”.
  
• 
  Now, Right Click on an empty space and select, “Show disconnected devices” and “Show disabled devices”.
  
• 
  Make sure that the Microphone is not disabled.
  

And also update the audio drivers from the manufacturer web site and install.

I suggest you to run the microphone troubleshooter by following the steps below:

• Type “Troubleshooter” in the search box and press Enter.
• Click on ‘View All’ on the top left corner.
• Click on “Recording Audio” from the list and follow the prompts for troubleshooting.

Microphone suddenly stopped working

My microphone is still not working. I even checked the BIOS as someone had suggested but there is no listing for the microphone in there.
