  1. Microphone not recognized. Help?

I have a Shure mic that has an Xlr to 6.5 plug cable, so I connect it to the mic and on the other end it's 6.5.

Since I can't afford an audio interface for now, I got an adapter from 6.5 to 3.5 so I can plug it into my laptop.

Thing is, when I plug it in it it's not recognized. The Realtek interface pops up to choose if the plugged device is a microphone or speakers/headphones. I choose mic and nothing happens.

No new mic pops up in the recording devices (control panel sound window) and no input is detected on the regular microphone device.

More details: I'm using FL studio. Inside of the program, when I choose any recording input from the three available, it doesn't capture any sound, but when fiddle with the connected 3.5 plug the volume bar goes up and there is static/distortion, the typicak sound you get when touching a mic plug.

It's not a hardware issue since this mic has worked before on this laptop. I got it and tested it. After 30 minutes of tweaking windows and FL settings some input was detected and I could hear my voice, but it was still wacky. Still, not a faulty mic because a friend has used it with no problems at all. Also it works fine as a speaker, so there are no faulty connections.

Any help? Am so frustrated with this, I try to fix it everyday to no avail. Any tips, advice or input is appreciated!

Thanks Microphone not recognized. Help? :)

    Hi Hassan,

Thanks for posting your query on Microsoft Community.

If a mic connected to this computer isn’t working properly then it’s likely a settings problem.

I suggest you to follow the below steps and check if it helps.

    • Right-click on the speaker icon in the bottom-right part of the screen.

    • Click on ‘Recording Devices‘.

    • A list of recording devices will appear. Try speaking into your microphone, and see if there any
green bars rising next to one of them while you talk.

    • If you don’t see any green bars skip to step 5.

    • Check if you can recognize which one of the devices in the list is your
microphone. If you found it, click on it to highlight it, and then click
      Set Default.

    • Check again if you see green bars rising when you talk into the microphone. If you do your mic is now correctly setup. If not, continue to next step.

    • Double-click on the device that represents your microphone. The
Microphone Properties window will appear. Click the Levels tab.

    • In the levels tab, drag the slider all the way to the right, until the number on the right says “100“.

    • Click OK and check if it helps.
Hope it helps, reply to us with the status of your issue. We will be happy to assist you.
