Windows 10: Microphone not working

I started having problems with my microphone when connecting the earphones to my computer. It always worked fine and I never changed any settings, but suddenly it just stopped working and now when I speak my voice is extremely low volume and can barely be heard. It's not a problem of the earphones since they record just fine when connected to my phone. When I unplug the earphones and use the built-in microphone of the pc it also works fine. The only problem is when the earphones are plugged in and I try to speak. I also noticed that the recording works somewhat normal in the first few seconds after plugging the earphones in but goes lower after seconds. I tried looking at the system settings and also turned the recording up to maximum from the control panel, but it changed nothing. Has anyone an idea what might be causing this and how to fix it?

Built in microphone not working

I suggest you to follow the steps below and check if it helps

Method 1: I suggest you to set microphone as default device and check.

• 
  Right click on the volume icon in the system tray and then click "Recording devices"
  
• 
  Right click on the blank space in the popped up window and then select "Show Disabled Devices" and "Show Disconnected Devices".
  
• 
  Right click on Microphone and then click "Enable".
  
• 
  Highlight the microphone and then choose "Set as Default Device".
  
• 
  Click Apply and OK.
  

Step 2: Make sure that the Microphone is not disabled.

• 
  Make sure that the Microphone is not disabled. Follow the steps given to check that:
  
• 
  Right click on the volume icon and select “Recording devices”.
  
• 
  Now, Right Click on an empty space and select, “Show disconnected devices” and “Show disabled devices”.
  
• 
  Make sure that the Microphone is not disabled.
  

And also update the audio drivers from the manufacturer web site and install.

External microphone does not work

The issue could be because of the microphone being in a disabled state. I suggest you to try the steps listed below and check if it works:

• Open Control Panel and categorize to view by
  Small Icons.
  
• Click on Speech Recognition and navigate to
  Advanced Speech Options > Microphone > Advanced
  
• Check Real Conexant HD Audio, save the changes and exit
  Control Panel.
  
• Restart the machine to see if the microphone works.
