  1. Microphone playing system audio

Recently, I wanted to enable "Stereo Mix" on my Windows 11 22H2 computer. I decided I didn't need it anymore, so I disabled it. Later that day, on a Google Meet with my friends, I was playing music. I saw my Google Meet microphone talking, so I paused the music to see if there was any background noise, and the bars stopped moving meaning I'm not "talking" anymore I played the music, and Meet started saying I was speaking again. Confused, I check my microphone, and it says it is my default microphone that is not supposed to record my computer's audio, but rather what I am saying, and real-lif

Microphone audio blasts to extreme volume while playing games

    Hi Mari,

    Welcome to Microsoft Community.

I'm Hahn and I'm here to help you with your concern.

It seems that your problem might be caused by some compatibility or driver issues between your microphone, your games, and your Windows 10 system. You could try some of the following steps to see if they help:

    - Audio feedback/looping - This can happen if your game audio is being picked up by the mic and amplified back into your headphones, creating a feedback loop. Try lowering the game volume, muting the game when talking, or adjusting the mic placement.

    - Incompatible audio formats - The game may be outputting audio in a format not compatible with your mic or voice chat software. Try changing the sample rate/bit depth settings in your mic properties or voice chat app.

    1. Driver or Software Issues: Sometimes, audio driver conflicts or software issues can cause audio distortions or sudden spikes in microphone volume. Make sure your audio drivers are up to date. You can also try reinstalling or updating any audio software you are using.

    2. Microphone Settings: Check the microphone settings in both the game and your operating system. Some games have their own microphone settings that could be affecting your audio quality. Also, check your operating system's microphone settings to ensure they are configured correctly.

    3. In-Game Settings: Certain games might have settings that affect microphone input, such as automatic gain control or noise reduction. Experiment with adjusting these settings within the games to see if it resolves the issue.

    5. Background Processes: Sometimes, background processes or applications can interfere with audio settings. Close any unnecessary applications and processes while playing games to see if that resolves the issue.

    6. Microphone Enhancements: In Windows, there's an "Enhancements" tab in the microphone properties where you can disable audio enhancements that might be causing issues. Right-click the speaker icon in the taskbar, select "Sounds," go to the "Recording" tab, select your microphone, click "Properties," and then navigate to the "Enhancements" tab.

    7. Microphone Hardware: It's also possible that there's an issue with the microphone hardware itself. If you have access to another microphone, try using that to see if the problem persists. If it doesn't, the issue might be with your original microphone.

The most likely causes based on your description seem to be an audio feedback loop or the game audio overdriving your microphone. I would suggest tweaking the game and mic volumes, positioning the mic further from speakers, and disabling any mic enhancements as a starting point. If issues persist, look into the other troubleshooting steps. Hopefully you can resolve the problem soon!

Since the issue seems to be game-specific, try troubleshooting the problem with the specific games you mentioned:

    - Control (2019): Check the in-game microphone settings and any audio-related options. If the game has its own microphone input settings, try adjusting them to see if it makes a difference.

    - Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2: Similarly, check the microphone settings within the game. If the game supports voice chat, there might be settings that are affecting your microphone input.

Additionally, if you're using Discord for voice communication while playing, make sure to check Discord's audio settings as well. Discord might be applying automatic gain control or noise suppression, which could contribute to the audio issues.

If you've tried all these steps and the issue persists, it might be worth reaching out to the technical support for the specific games you're experiencing this issue with. They might have more specific insights or solutions for your situation.

    Your Sincerely
