Microsoft apologizes for offending OneDrive fans, but won't restore un

    Hi there

However there are other things such as "Uninvited Guests" (Burglars !! although in my neighbourhood these are pratically unheard of) or accidental damage, erasure or loss.

It always makes sense to have more than one copy of important backups - and store the extra copy in a different location --even in your work's desk if you haven't anywhere else you can use as an off site location.

I re-iterate again that important data is best handled by YOU -- HDD space is ridiculously cheap these days and Ms isn't the only company to change conditions mid flight. What about some mobile phone providers for starters. Loads of other examples I'm sure you can think of.

Also what is the legal definition of "Reasonable Use". They can make this up as they go along.

A bit like the Law they have over in the U.K --you can get arrested for "Liable to cause a breach of the Peace" -- and that seems to be up to any old "Plod" in the street (local police) to decide.

Some of my data is far more valuable than the equipment it resides on -- so I'm NOT going to entrust it to unknown servers with probably low paid and even lower skilled staff in some 3rd world country.

    Cheers
    jimbo

Personally, the cloud works great for me because I have multiple devices that I access my data from in multiple locations. I can access it from my phone, I can access it from my computer at work, my wife can access it from her laptop no matter where she is, it just works. Couple that with the fact that now these data files are in multiple locations, in the cloud, on my work computer, on my wife's laptop, we never lose anything.

All of my personal notes, and work notes, are stored in Evernote. My cell phone, a galaxy note 4, synchronizes all of its notes to Evernote as well. So even if I lose my phone, all of my personal notes are safe. Maybe not so much from prying eyes, but I haven't lost the information. And since it's not of a private nature, that is no big deal.

Anything that is personal, is in an encrypted volume, or in the event of passwords it is in an encrypted database, even in the cloud.

My personal preference, is Dropbox. However I get more free storage from one drive, so that is where I put my big stuff. My wife does not share the one drive stuff, only the stuff in Dropbox.

So for me I cannot tell an individual to simply avoid it. I have to tell that individual to evaluate your needs, and see if the technology is appropriate.

So, if I upload 5 Gb before next year, I will get Office 365 personal free for a year? Do you need a debit/credit card for that? Does this apply to windows 7 or just windows 10? If you need a debit/credit card to get if for free, I don't consider it free. I already saved my free storage limits.

My guess would be no. You would likely have had to demonstrate a historical overage in order to qualify for a free year of Office 365.

Regardless of that, for those that do qualify. I have a sneaky suspicion Microsoft will require you to use a debit/credit card to get the free offer. Which makes it not free in my opinion.

  6. Of course you need to have a credit/debit card when signing up. That doesn't make in any less free for the FIRST year. You go over that year without canceling you'll get charged. You are never going to get signed up to a paid-subscription service without providing a means of payment. That is just how it works.

Sometimes it is almost impossible to stop subscription based payments. I read the horror stories on other forum. I am not saying Microsoft does this. Even, if the card gets canceled, the merchant can somehow get the new number. You can fight your bank to turn off that feature but that is hard to do as well. That why I never have a superscription unless I pay cash. The only exception I would allow is an cable/Internet service provider and possibly a landlord but that is it.

Yeah, subscriptions using a credit card are a problem - mostly because I myself forget to cancel it in time. I prefer to deal with those on a cash basis also. Then they come and poke at my door when it's time to pay again.

  9. Thank for the info. Opt in. *Wink

i hope you have at least one copy of your date off site like in another location because if some disaster strikes like fire/earthquake/flood/lightning etc your data may be gone no matter that you had RAID and backups.

Everything I have stored on OneDrive is also stored on two hard drives. One drive is a internal HDD and the other one is a USB HDD drive. I also have copies of the photos I've scanned on cd/dvd. I would never depend on the cloud as my only backup source.

You worry too much. None of that has ever happened during my 78 years.

  15. That is why you cancel it the day you start the subscription. You already have the time you bought, canceling the subscription right then will not remove that time. It will merely stop the subscription from renewing.
