Windows 10: microsoft authenticator is not working properly.

my program gives me a number to match in the authenticator and the authenticator gives me acode. there are no numbers to match and no place for the code on the log in screen.... I am stuck in a loop. I try to log in a different way and it sends a code to my email. I log in and it wont accept code and wants to sent a matching number to the app.help......
