Microsoft confirms new Windows 11 issue: some Apps may render Colors Incorrectly

Microsoft confirmed another known Windows 11 issue in December 2021 that affects the rendering of colors in certain applications on systems that run the operating system.

Windows 11 was released in October 2021 and the operating system is still in its rollout phase. Not all compatible devices that run Windows 10 have received an offer to upgrade to the new version of Windows yet.

Some PCs and devices may be blocked from the upgrade if known issues would likely affect the operation of the system. The new issue has no update blocks at the time of writing.

Microsoft describes the issue in the following way:

After installing Windows 11, some image editing programs might not render colors correctly on certain HDR displays. This is frequently observed with white colors, which could display in bright yellow or other colors.

This issue occurs when certain color-rendering Win32 APIs return unexpected information or errors under specific conditions. Not all color profile management programs are affected, and color profile options available in the Windows 11 Settings page, including Microsoft Color Control Panel, are expected to function correctly.

Some image editors may render colors incorrectly on certain HDR displays. Microsoft fails to list application and HDR monitor combinations that are affected, but mentions that color profile options in the Windows 11 Settings are not affected by the issue.

The company is working on a patch to resolve the issue and estimates that it will have it ready by the end of January 2022.

Workarounds are not available at the time of writing. Users affected by this may be able to switch to another image editor if they are affected by the issue, or switch monitors, which is another option to work around the issue at the time of writing.

The patch won't be published on the January Patch Tuesday, which is set to happen on January 11, 2022. It is more likely that Microsoft will push the update with the preview updates that it releases later in the month. Most devices will receive the update then on the February 2022 Patch Tuesday.

The issue has only been confirmed to affect Windows 11 devices. Windows 10 devices are not affected by the issue according to Microsoft.

You can check our regularly updated list of Windows 11 issues for an overview of all resolved and existing issues that affect the operating system. Currently, three known issues and 12 resolved issues are recorded.

Now You: do you install preview updates to resolve issues early?

Microsoft Confirms DirectX 11 to Accompany Windows 7

Microsoft's Ben Basaric, product marketing manager for Windows products, confirmed to PC Games Hardware that the next major update to the DirectX API, DirectX 11 would accompany Windows 7, the next major consumer operating system software by Microsoft. This, overwriting his own statement given to the website earlier that he wasn't sure if DirectX 11 would be ready to ship with the OS upon its launch. Furthermore, he also indicated that Windows Vista will have access to the updated API, although not sure at what point in time.
