Microsoft confirms Windows 10 KB5039211 breaks some apps’ taskbar menu

Microsoft has confirmed that it’s aware of a new issue that could break the right-click menu of apps pinned to the taskbar. This bug affects all recent updates for Windows 10, including Windows 10 KB5039211 (June security patch), KB5037849 (May optional patch), KB5037768 (May security patch), and KB5036979 (April optional patch).

As you know, Windows 10 has a jump list feature, which is a menu that appears when you right-click apps pinned to the taskbar. It also appears when you right-click apps in the Start menu. The jump list lets you quickly access some features. For example, when WhatsApp is pinned to the taskbar, you can right-click the icon to start a new conversation or call.

Unfortunately, as some users previously told Windows Latest, Windows 10’s taskbar jump list is broken, triggering the “open with…” menu instead. In our tests, Windows Latest observed that it affects only a small number of apps and users, particularly apps that use a custom jump list.

The left side shows normal/expected taskbar behaviour. The right side shows “open with” menu launching incorrectly.

Microsoft Teams and Outlook (new) are also affected. If you have pinned Teams or Outlook to the taskbar and right-click the shortcuts to access features like “Status, Quit, Call, etc.,” you might see the “Open with” dialog box instead.

The “Open with” dialog box typically appears when you right-click apps on the desktop and select the “Open with” option. However, a bug randomly triggers the “Open with” menu.

In an update to the support document first spotted by Windows Latest, Microsoft has confirmed that it has identified the fix, which will be included in an upcoming update for Windows 10 22H2.

Microsoft won’t give us the full list of affected apps, but you might run into these issues when right-clicking shortcuts for Microsoft Teams, new Outlook for Windows, and Snip & Sketch.

Users report audio problems in Windows 10 KB5039211

In new posts on Feedback Hub, some users flagged problems with Realtek Audio Drivers after installing Windows 10 KB5039211.

If you’re affected, you might see an alert stating no speakers or headphones are plugged in. This alert shows up directly on the taskbar.

In some cases, you might not see the audio driver in Device Manager.

Another user flagged more serious problems, including Blue Screen of Death and problems with Windows system file (winload.efi).

Microsoft has yet to acknowledge reports of audio problems, but the tech giant is looking into the taskbar problems.

    Windows 10 Tweaks

As you may already know, Windows 10 (as well as Windows 8) allow you to log in with a valid Microsoft account, instead of creating a local account that only works on your machine. However, you may prefer to keep a local account for privacy reasons. If you do, though, some Windows 10 features—like Cortana—may not work. Despite the default behavior, the Windows 10 Store is not one of them. You can still log in to your Microsoft account for just the Store without switching to a full Microsoft account. The process, however, is not terribly obvious. To do so, follow these steps:

    • Launch the Store from your Start menu.
    • Click the user icon next to the search box.
    • Click “Sign-in” from the menu that appears.
    • Choose “Microsoft account” and log in like normal.
    • When the “Make it yours” box appears do not enter your password. Instead, click “Sign in to just this app instead.”

    Feature suggestion: Add right-click menu

Suggestion: Please add a Windows 7 Jump-List and/or right-click menu to the GPU-Z icon in the Windows taskbar. Possible menus in it would be "Exit" and "About GPU-Z...".
Maybe also "Switch to tab 1/Switch to tab 2/Switch to videocard 1/Switch to videocard 2" too.
Examples of programs that have such menus are ICQ, Skype, AIM.

NOTE: It seems for a right-click menu, Windows 7 is not needed - it works on WinXP and Vista too.
But even a Windows 7 Jump-list may be good enough.
    What do you think?

Feature suggestions - move to proper menus, add Options window

    Suggestions:
    1) Remove main menus from top left menu (system menu) and move them to a standard Windows menu, at the top.
Leave the 6 system menu items (Restore --- Close) in system menu, move all the rest to that standard main menu. The main menu can be auto-hidable - pressing Alt key to invoke it or hide it, similar to the way IE11 menus and many Windows 10 built-in apps' menus work.

    2) And/or, add an Options menu or button, which would invoke a separate screen with GPU-Z Options, similar to how most Windows apps work.
Most Windows apps have a separate Options screen, which GPU-Z lacks - one should be added.

    Thanks in advance for listening!
