Microsoft confirms Windows 10 KB5062554 breaks emoji picker’s search feature

KB5062554, the July 2025 security update for Windows 10, has wrecked some elements of the emoji picker for users. The issue doesn’t render the complete feature useless, but it partially affects it, notably the search feature.

Whenever you try searching for something, the feature doesn’t execute it. We installed the KB5062554 update on our test PC and noticed the same problem. After clicking on the search icon in the emoji picker, we straight up saw the “We couldn’t find this one” message in the dialog box.

Unlike some Windows issues, this isn’t an isolated one. Reddit saw a surge in KB5062554 update-related posts, which discussed this same problem. The emoji picker worked fine, but the search appeared broken after installing the monthly security update. Microsoft recognized this issue a couple of days back and currently offers no workaround for it.

So, the only way to get the emoji picker’s search feature working is to uninstall the KB5062554 update from your Windows 10 PC. It seems rather excessive to remove a security update for restoring the search function, but sadly, that’s the only resort. Many users verified that the feature worked after discarding the update, so you have some assurance now.

Microsoft doesn’t mention anything more, but you can expect a patch either with the next optional update. Apart from this pending issue, two more problems lurk in Windows 10.

Parental controls and Microsoft Changjie bugs

Family Safety’s web filtering feature ensures that parents control how their child uses the browser. If the child wants to use another browser and not Edge, the parents have to approve it.

This worked fine with old versions of other popular browsers, but now, parents cannot approve anything except Edge. It’s because Microsoft has to update their block list with the latest versions of all the supported browsers before parents can use the feature.

Another persistent problem is with the Microsoft Changjie Input Method Editor for Windows 10. Users cannot type correctly, keys stop responding, and a few more broken features. Fortunately, you can follow the official workaround listed on the Health page to restore an old version of Microsoft Changjie and then continue using it without errors.

  2. Emoji Picker Search Not Working

I can bring up the emoji picker with <Win+period> but when I try to search for an emoji by typing in the box, the box does not show the characters I type. Instead, it shows the keys in the order they are on the keyboard like this:

    What I type: smile

    What shows: qwert

Sometimes, it will be offset by a certain number of characters. I.e. sometimes it will start with "`1234", other times "ghjkl", etc. It seems to run on a cycle so the pattern repeats and it seems the pattern can start at any position depending on external factors.

If I start typing in the emoji search box and lets say the box shows "qwer" if I close the box and type something in another program, let's say "hello" then I open the emoji search again and start typing, the first character to show in the search will be "p". The five letters in "hello" (typed in another progarm) counted toward the cycle of characters in the emoji picker search so that it skips over "tyuio" and goes straight to "p".

Restarting the computer does not help. This has been happening for a month or more. I don't really use the search feature of the emoji picker that often as the emojis I want are generally right there when I open the picker and I can select with the arrow keys.

  3. Emoji Picker Search Not Working

Hello! My name is Cristiano. I'm an Independent Advisor. I'm glad to help you.

To resolve this, you may want to try a few steps in order to troubleshoot the issue.

First, you can try resetting the emoji picker settings. To do this, follow these steps:

    1. Open the Settings app by pressing Windows key + I.

    2. Click on "Time & Language".

    3. Click on "Language" from the left sidebar.

    4. Scroll down to the "Preferred languages" section and click on "Options" next to your language.

    5. Scroll down to the "Keyboard" section and click on "Input method".

    6. Click on "Options" next to the "Microsoft Emoji" input method.

    7. Click on "Reset" under the "Reset to default" section.

If this doesn't resolve the issue, you can run the System File Checker (SFC) and Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) tools to check for and repair any corrupt system files. To do this, follow these steps:

    1. Open the Command Prompt as an administrator by searching for "Command Prompt" in the Start menu, right-clicking it, and selecting "Run as administrator".

    2. Type "sfc /scannow" and press Enter. This will scan your system files for any errors and repair them if possible.

    3. Once the SFC scan is complete, type "DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth" and press Enter. This will check for and repair any issues with the Windows image files.

You may want to visit this forum and see if any of the suggestions help you with this issue:

Microsoft confirms Windows 10 KB5062554 breaks emoji picker’s search feature

    Emoji Picker Search Not Working

Hi Cristiano, thanks a lot for your assistance and step by step instructions !

Unfortunately it aappears that the necessary 'Basic typing feature' seem to be available only if the US English language is installed (feature identified with the 'abc' above a checkmark) ?

Microsoft confirms Windows 10 KB5062554 breaks emoji picker’s search feature UbEihQQ7oGylE7IuZZga7%2BLItySRfh1xf6DwYdbyz3whTAPqAa83msL0%2BqP6a5I3HDKY9tiGbS%2FBsPcqolcTxMY%3D.png

Only when I select English (United States) does the emoji search work, but the spellchecking and other language features are the not the right ones.

When I toogle back the keyboard language the usual and needed language (UK,FR,NL), emoji search no longer works (I can still mouse-select an emoji).

Does this mean it's a US-feature only ? Or can I add the 'basic typing feature' to the other languages ? I didn't find how...

When following your posts' instructions, it all stops at step 6 : there is not Microsoft Emoji input method, hence no options button, whatever preferred language is selected.

I'm running Windows 10 Enterprise (v22H2 build 19045.3324) whose version is managed by the IT dept.

Thanks for your further guidance, if you see any paths to explore here ?

    Best regards,

    Paul

    PS: Yes sfc/scannow is okay.
