Microsoft continues campaign to shut down stupid software pirates

    Hi there

Low income or lack of it is NO excuse for piracy --when I was a kid we didn't have a lot of money - and we even had an outside toilet -- and I can assure you that was no fun either in Winter. You just decide to "get of your backside" and improve your lot which most people duly did.

If Windows is too expensive then use something else --Windows is good but there are perfectly acceptable FREE alternatives.

I do agree though pricing policies are sometimes rather mystyfying although it's not always MS's fault -- some really PENAL taxation in some jurisdictions doesn't help -- I beleive the UK has a mind numbingly wallet busting VAT of 20% and that country isn't the worst by any manner.

A lot of piracy could also be stopped by abandoning some of the restrictive geolocation rules for sports / movies etc (Netflix for example) and also allowing reasonable digital purchase of movies / TV series at reasonable fees instead of insisting on rediculous physical DVD's with hideous restrictive DRM everwhere.

Trouble with a lot of people today is that they lack aspiration and expect everything to be handed to them on a plate -- get real Life's not like that and there's plenty of people world wide who started with NOTHING and have ended up quite OK without having to rob and steal to do it.

That said of course - I wonder what it would actually COST Ms to release Windows 10 FREE and simply charge for service such as Office and upgrades.

Forgetting Trump as a Politician --if you actually READ his biography he actually worked really hard in setting up businesses as did Bill gates etc. OK some people get a slightly easier start than others but they all have to work really hard to get where they are at. Others are Lord Sugar (Amstrad), Richard Branson (Virgin) TATA (Steel etc in India) and zillions more.

    Cheers

I hate to open another can of worms. Microsoft has a problems with some of the windows 10 store apps. You can't really tell if the store apps is legit or legal in your country. There are a lot of questionable store apps I have came across that could be against the DCMA or other laws. I was hoping using a windows 10 store app, I wouldn't have to worry about getting stuff that is illegal in my jurisdiction. You can usually tell if something is legal or not when using a web browser. When using an windows 10 store app free or paid, you have no idea if it is legal or not in your country.

I don't think so. Not every app is available in every country. Let's take Netflix as an example. It's available in countries that Netflix is available but not in countries that Netflix is available. I have no idea of the apps your talking about but I highly doubt any exist.

I don't know what app your referring to. I would think they would have a link with more info or a link to a home page that would say if it's not legal in certain countries.

I think some folks are forgetting that in most new systems have built in Serial numbers now days (UEFI). that number is assigned to a specific Windows (Home, Home P., Pro, etc.), Thus if your system crashes you can use any copy of the windows OS that came with your system.

another excuse that makes me laugh is; it cost to much. I just don't make enough money to buy it, so I have no choice accept to private a copy. I use Office 16. It cost me about Ten Dollars a month that Microsoft has my permission to to charge my CC each month. . .not big deal. . .*Smile

They have enough money to build/buy a custom system but can't afford to buy a legit OS. Definitely a poor excuse.

    Hi there

Your Netflix is actually a BAD example as it illustrates the point a previous poster was making about whether an app from the Ms store is legal in your country.

Netflix is available in a huge number of places but content is often very different depending on where Netflix "Thinks" your subscription is based -- and from the menu etc most customers who don't use Forums etc would probably have no idea of the huge difference in content that Netflix offers. Netflix is centrally based but takes its orders from the content providers so it only shows what it has rights to show and these are often very different in places --getting rid of this geolocation B/S would reduce Piracy far more than messing around with the various Court systems and trying ineffectial Blocking mechanisms.

Ms is in a somewhat different position as a lot of its work is outsourced or of shored and the Store would have very different problems in ascertaining whether something was legal or not. Plus the store (like Google play store) would be (eventually) filled with zillions of low priced apps - sometimes costing just a few cents. Managing that lot efficiently would probably cost more than the entire worth of Ms itself !!!!.

I'm not sure though that blantantly illegal apps like say busting 4K encryption on the latest Hi res films would make it through so I don't think the Store would be a problem.

I tend to avoid these types of "Stores" anyway so in my case the issue doesn't arise.

    Cheers

  9. I pay £5.99 a month for Office 2016 which is me is ok would rather pay and have all the extras and updates than not pay and have an illegal copy and it ether don't work or keeps crashing the computer.
Also Netflix which I have both on my phone and laptop

    Campaign all they want.
As long as pirating is profitable, it will continue and can't be stopped.

We have Netflix in Ireland and you can only stream stuff that's legal in Ireland. They have also put a system in place to detected which country you are based. Don't know if this works. Never tried it.

As an aside, when I got through to their call centre it was in the US! Usually I get through to India or China.

My point if Microsoft is going after piracy they should police their store apps better. It kind of like "Do as we say, not as we do" in my opinion. I question some of free anime & free movie apps it just doesn't feel right to me. One major reason is you can't tell if what you are watching is legal or not in your country. From the web browser in most cases you can tell. One of the anime apps opened up a browser and wanted me to install software, which I didn't. I am not using windows 10 right now, I am having some issues with it. Intel decided not to support some graphic drivers for windows 10 & some Newer Linux distos. They maybe be changing their mind at least for windows 10, I see some beta drivers Intel is working on for Windows 10 anniversary update.

I'm sure that MS is not violating any laws with anything in their store.

Here is the Crunch --So Long as it's profitable.

I know I might be near the mark here -- but if "Joe bloggs" say records a film from BBC or wherever and uploads it to a torrent site at ZERO cost where does the site actually make its money from. If you use something like Firefox and disable all scripts you won't get bombarded with ads etc so how do these sites make their money --operating a load of fast servers isn't that cheap and the site operators aren't doing it "out of the goodness of their hearts".

    @fjk61011

Iceland used to get UK content from Netflix --so hobbled that even official Govt websites were telling how to bypass blocks and get the US Site !!!!!.

Of course a small country with less population than some Dublin suburbs isn't going to cause Hollywood a whole lot of hassle - but you can understand the principle here.

Not sure if allowed on the Forum but the party got a huge amount of votes in the election so a legit political organisation and they aren't advocating "Breaking Intellectual copyright " rules or intellectual ownership of content but a reform of the more absurd copyright and intellectual management systems.

    http://www.piratar.is/policies/?lang=en

Now no problem -- and subscription just the same --so COMPLAIN if services like Netflix aren't operating fairly or you are getting less content.

    Cheers
