In our town we get 3 hours per day so the number of hours of usage varies from place to place.

I read Nigel's post and see his point.... still have the issue of "where did it really go?", but, as Nigel said, that's for somewhere else, not here.

The only way you would know if you could live without a computer is to try! Give it a go and let us know how it went.

*Wink Na.. I'm hooked on using one now but back in the late 80's thru the mid 90's I didn't have a PC and I was able to function just fine. Granted I did work at The Travelers and using a computer for 8+ hours a day was more than enough usage for me. When I did have to go in a fix a hang(program error) I preferred going in to work and address the issue since all of the needed documentation was there and not at my home.

EDIT: We did have the ability to connect to the systems at The Travelers some time around 1988 on. I chose not to due to the reasons I mentioned above. And in addition many times I would be done fixing the issues very early in the morning.. about 4-5am so I was better off just staying and work for the day and go home early.

I think I could live without a PC. Honestly most of what I do now is just a bit of fun stuff. I could pay my bills in person. The only thing I would need to access the internet for would be to order things or pick movies out on Netflix and I could use the libraries computers to get that done.

Right now I chose to use a computer.. it's not like I have to.

I do my bills through the bank, they are automatically transfered. But I mean, I would have to go out, to meet friends after a hard days work, or watch whatever crap reality BS is on TV, for entertainment, or actually buy CDs(listen to a couple of times, then shelve them) instead of YouTube, where I can here from bands, and music styles I never heard of otherwise.

That was pre-internet, and most people back then couldn't spell PC. You, and most people, were able to function just fine because the world and society in general was geared to whatever technology was available. Apples and IBM PCs were a hobbiest thing, for the most part. Business was geared to computers that took up entire floors of an office building. But, today, as Cliff said, we could probably survive, but not live as we are accustomed to.

There's always the library! Gotta remember to check the trunk and make sure the snow shovel is there.....

I understand.. I watch TV with Erin and she doesn't have cable so the selection is very slim but she likes what she gets, epically Jane the Virgin. For me I have cable so I have a variety of programming to watch and I go down to the club house for AA/NA and that's about a block from my duplex. But I totally agree on the music. I would have never heard of many of the groups I like or do the study that I'm doing to learn how to play my guitar or chat with members of MLP.

So there is a need.. but a person can live without it.. many do.

We didn't use the internet to connect to our systems. There was software from IBM that allowed use to dial directly into them to access the mainframes. We started using PC's at work around 1985 when we got the IBM XT. Primitive but we were able to connect to the mainframes and do spread sheet and word processing without an issue. Travelers also had a system where we could bring home an XT/AT to use for work.

EDIT: And I forgot about the PS/2.. they were great PC's:

Yes, all work related. I'm familiar with the state-of-the-art 56kbs modem. Lucky if you got 34! Usually 28 or 14.4. Don't miss at all having to yell "Don't pick up the phone!! I'm on the computer!".

It would be quite a site to watch this world today if suddenly all computers just stopped.........
