Windows 10: Microsoft dumps Internet Explorer in Windows 10 21H2 preview build

Microsoft recently opened up a little about the transition to Internet Explorer-free Windows 10 experience and revealed that Chromium Edge is the future of Internet Explorer on the operating system. After the announcement, changes have already begun to appear in the preview builds of Windows 10’s next feature update “Sun Valley“.

The transformation may be complete but Microsoft isn’t doing away with Internet Explorer completely. Initially, users of Internet Explorer will be automatically redirected to Microsoft Edge when they attempt to visit websites in the retired browser. This change is now being tested with Insiders.

In the preview builds, Microsoft has started sending Internet Explorer traffic to Microsoft Edge. This change is currently available in Build 21387 or newer and it’s expected to go live in the production channel in October or November. If everything goes according to the plan, Windows 10 21H2 update will disable IE11 by default.

Microsoft to retire Internet Explorer in 2022


In older versions, such as version 20H2 or version 2004 of Windows 10, Internet Explorer will be retired in June of 2022. Microsoft has confirmed it will kill off defunct Internet Explorer, and some Microsoft services can no longer be accessed in the IE11 desktop app as part of the phased discontinuation plan.



After the deadline of June 2022 has passed, users of the unsupported browser will be redirected automatically to Microsoft Edge (Chromium). If you bypass the redirect, you’ll be able to use the browser with limited features. For example, Microsoft 365 features, Microsoft account services and popular websites will be unavailable.

Microsoft will, however, continue to honour the server version of Internet Explorer and enterprise customers will be able to access the retired browser for more months. However, it’s no longer possible to use all Microsoft 365 apps via the browser.

Chromium-based Edge, which has replaced EdgeHTML-based Edge Legacy, will remain the company’s new flagship offering. In an announcement for business customers, Microsoft explained that Chromium Edge delivers a host of security and quality features that users might expect from a modern browsing solution.

In addition to IE11 changes, Windows 10 21H2 latest preview build has also fixed numerous bugs.

For example, Microsoft fixed an issue where the post-upgrade welcome screens displayed texts using a broken version of Times New Roman font. Likewise, Microsoft has fixed another bug that resulted in installation issues with Windows Updates, particularly .NET updates.

Microsoft Internet Explorer renamed to Windows Internet Explorer ?




Since version 7 of the world`s most popular web browser - Microsoft Internet Explorer was silently renamed to Windows Internet Explorer.Such a step from Microsoft is not a surprise since Internet Explorer is part of the Windows operation system for a long time.Obviously Microsoft corp. wants to state that Internet Explorer is already considered as a part of Windows and not as an external browser (remember the IE and WMP law issues last year!?).

 

Microsoft Releases Internet Explorer 10 Consumer Preview for Windows 7

Microsoft released Internet Explorer 10 Consumer Preview for Windows 7, the only other operating system to support it, apart from Windows 8 and Windows RT, with which it made its stable debut last month, earning Mozilla's cake. Posted as "Pre-Release," the browser provides most functionality as its Windows 8 stable version. Most of its performance enhancements, including the ability to flip through pages in articles by swiping across a touchscreen, are available.

Windows Internet Explorer 9 Released

Microsoft released Internet Explorer 9, in its stable RTM form, nearly an year after it first released "Platform Previews", followed by Betas and Release Candidates. With its latest release, Microsoft's still popular web-browser underwent a major overhaul in terms of features and browser-engine. The new browser is backed by a faster Javascript engine, a faster rendering engine that makes use of GPU hardware acceleration for drawing, and redesigned user interface elements that make day to day web browsing experience snappier.

With Internet Explorer 9, Microsoft also took a bold step in not supporting Windows XP, which still holds a large chunk of the operating system market share, the new browser only supports Windows 7, Windows Vista, and Windows 2008/2008-R2 series operating systems. The user interface is far more minimalistic, uses simple icons, the status and menu bars are hidden by default, with tooltips doing the job of a status bar, and the browser continues to support a large number of ActiveX components. The browser also underwent a security overhaul. For 64-bit versions of Windows, the installer also packs a 64-bit version of the browser. Oracle already has a stable 64-bit Java ActiveX plugin, while Adobe Labs has a beta 64-bit Flash player for Windows, two big steps in porting the web-browser to x86-64.
