Microsoft Edge, Chrome to get new clipboard features on Windows 10, Windows 11

Microsoft is working with Google on a new API called “Picking Clipboard” that will upgrade the existing clipboard functionality of browsers like Chrome and Edge.

The big clipboard update is expected to improve the copy-and-paste feature on both Windows 10 and Windows 11. This change is particularly helpful for those who deal with online image editors, Office apps, and uploading platforms.

Microsoft’s new API will extend the copy-and-paste feature. Right now, you can use your browser to copy and paste a small selection of files between the website and Windows apps. The list of supported file formats include .JPG or .JPEG, PNG, HTML and a few other formats.

Chromium-based browsers currently rely on Async Clipboard API, which is also going to power the new Pickling Clipboard, already allows apps to read and write commonly-used formats to the OS clipboard so that both websites and native Windows apps can interact with them. For example, text and images.

With the proposed Picple Clipboard API, you will be able to copy and paste a wide range of popular file types, such as .docx and TIFF. The docx format is used in Microsoft Word, while TIFF is used for graphic design. This change is expected to benefit various web apps that rely on content uploaded by the user.

In a new update to the status page, Microsoft officials have confirmed that the feature is now likely to arrive with Chrome 98 or Edge 98. Remember that the plans are always subject to change and there’s no guarantee that we will see the major clipboard upgrade in Chromium 98.

What is the new Pickling Clipboard API for Chromium?

Pickling Clipboard API will allow sites to interact with more clipboard formats. In addition to support for more formats, developers will be able to create their own custom clipboard formats with support for the copy-and-paste function provided their solution does not affect the security of the browser of the operating system itself.

These file types will be based on the operating system clipboard, so you’ll be able to copy content from nearly all popular file formats with your keyboard shortcut and share the content across different browsers, web apps and desktop apps.

Microsoft has confirmed that the feature is going to be compatible with today’s security standards. Additionally, Microsoft won’t allow these formats to interoperate with or compromise some legacy native applications.

For better performance, Microsoft will ensure the clipboard data is not sanitized by the browser. This can prevent clipboard data loss when you copy and paste.

In addition to these Chromium improvements, Microsoft is also working on Edge-only features, such as Windows Search integration and more.

Microsoft is developing a built-in ad blocker for its Edge browser

"One of the first browser add-ons many people install to improve their online experience is Adblock Plus or something similar. Until recently, Microsoft Edge's lack of support for add-ons put off a lot of would-be users, but reports from Build 2016 suggest that native ad blocking is on its way to the Internet Explorer successor.

Adblock Plus is coming to Edge, but built-in ad blocking would negate the need for such an add-on. A slide shown off and snapped at a Build presentation shows that the next version of Edge, in response to user feedback, will feature ad blocking capabilities. There's no word on delivery timescale, but the upcoming Windows 10 Anniversary Update would seem a likely candidate.

ZDNet's Ed Bott photographed the slide which shows Microsoft's development roadmap built around feedback from testers. Right at the top of the list is reference to plans to create a plugin and extension store for Edge, but it's entry number four that's more intriguing.

"Build ad blocking features into the browser" is listed as a Feature Request from users. But the good news is that it is not only listed as being "Deliverable 4682811", but as "Targeted for the next version".

This will no doubt come as good news for those who have fallen in love with Edge, but it's not something that will be welcomed by the likes of Adblock Plus. It does seem that, particularly in the mobile arena, there is a move to baking ad blocking into the browser so it makes sense that Microsoft is following the trend. But it is the fact that Edge straddles Windows 10 on the desktop and Windows 10 Mobile that makes this a particularly interesting move.

Keep an eye out for Insider builds in the coming weeks as the feature may be just around the corner.

Forget extensions, built-in ad blocking is coming to Microsoft Edge - [UPDATE... no it's not!]

    Windows 10 Tweaks

Pressing “Windows+Pause Break” (it’s up there next to scroll lock) opens the “System” Window.

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

    • Open a new Explorer window.
    • Click View in the ribbon.
    • Click Options.
    • Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
    • Click OK

Windows 10 1809 Clipboard, Edge and Chrome

I recently upgraded to Windows 10 1809, however this build of Windows is experiencing issues that I never had on 1803

The Start Menu, Edge Browser, and the new UI are not able to interact with the Clipboard. I am unable to copy or paste anything to or from any of these entities.

The clipboard has always worked on 1803, yet never worked on 1809.

I have the latest patches installed.

Also at random times, Edge would simply close itself. especially if minimized.

Also Chrome only works if I run it as an Administrator.
